Is the PS Vita a viable alternative to the PSP yet? I still use my PSP for PlayStation 1 titles and emulation, so I'm wondering if there are any major benefits that would make the investment worthwhile.

Emulation wise, yeah definitely. If you hack it, you can get all those emulators, and even natively run the PSP's OS.
