The improved translation is great, you might even understand what's going on this time. Maybe. But I'd recommend using the patch they have for the original PSX rom in case you don't wanna buy it. I'm not sure they have the other Reunion mods for the PSX rom but whatever they mostly suck. New character models my ass.

Not really. Dirge of Cerberus was pretty bad.

Crisis core got a decent fanbase at release, but it has aged pretty poorly imo. The combat is roll and around until you get behind the enemies, and then mash X.
The cutscenes are basically made for the 2007 Deviantart crowd, with one character literally being based off of Gackt (the J-pop singer).

Can't say, I don't often do this combination of pirating + modding a game. Usually when I want to mod a game I like it enough to buy it. And on pc you can sooner or later find a good deal for any game. I just pirated ffvii on a whim, and wasn't too invested in the attempt. I don't want to buy that game again, since I've already bought at least 2 psx versions in the past, and one pre-steam pc version iirc.

The stories are pretty pants-on-head retarded.

That being said, the gameplay in both is a lot of fun. Lots of room for combat strategy and optimization for preferred play styles.

Seems like there are a lot of potential problems with that, since emulating on its own is already a mixed bag, depending on the original platform. Now, when it comes to games that were ported to pc, and modding/patching those (or pirated versions of them), I don't foresee any issues. I don't know how I had the energy to put up with all of the JRPG grind bullshit this game and others like it put me through as a kid. And severeal of them, and multiple playthroughs. Now, even if I could lose myself in the game enough to care to do it all, it'd just hit me that much harder that it was all a waste of time when I inevitably snap out of it and am forced to stuff that matters irl, like prepare healthy meals, work, exercise etc.

This. FFVII has the nostalgia factor for me that no other game has, because it was the first FF I ever played. I was like 8 when VII came out, and the music blew me away more than anything else. People may not like it, but it's hard to argue the soundtrack isn't incredible. Atmospheric when it needs to be, with some solid themes. I think Crazy Motorcycle Chase is incredibly underrated, as is Hurry! - the clock-like sounds give everything such an urgency.

Sephiroth is the son of Hojo and Lucretia (who cucked Vincent). he was infused with Jenova's cells in some random ass experiement. Hojo thought Jenova was an ancient and wrote it down in his notes. These are the same notes Sephiroth reads, and mistakens Jenova as a Ancient.

The second problem with Hojo's theory is that he thought Ancients weren't part of the world, and associated it with Jenova who is a parasite.

So Hojo got everything wrong, and Sephiroth read bad science and convinced himself he was the chosen one from Jenova.

My favorite is the talk around the Mako Fountain in the flashback. It's a scene that connects VII to the rest of the series in introducing the mystical half to the game. It's also beautiful and concerns interesting topics and characterizations.

You really shouldn't. All the others besides Before Crisis are terrible and screw things up royally. Before Crisis does make about three atrocious mistakes, the second most glaring of which, the reactor scene, that it shares with Last Order, was retconned as a mistaken report, so you can ignore it at least, but overall it treats VII with respect and actually answers questions the original raised instead of conjuring its own problems and questions to answer. It's the only one I could consider mildly good in the Compilation. Falls clearly short of VII naturally.

Still beyond that Dirge of Cerberus goes after new lore and doesn't revolve around Sephiroth and Jenova cells at least unlike the rest, which aren't worth your time or anger.

Honestly a large chunk of it is his design.
It's a bit shallow, but I'd say it's fairly justified in JRPgs. Also really like his backstory, I relate a bit to it, as I too "discovered" my dad later on in life, after having grown up mostly with my mother. It sounds a bit cheesy, but yeah.

And that theme. Only wish his final Limit was better, but the game was always broken when it came to the late game.

Recently replayed FFVII. The story and characters were never that memorable to me even back when I first played it in the PS1 era. And not much changed in this replay of the game. Except I liked Tifa a lot more. I actually enjoyed her personality and role in the story more than her tits. She felt like an updated version of Rosa from FFIV.

Materia is actually a really poor system. Since you're not gonna master anything except the basic elementslike Ice and Lightning, since you get them within the first hour of the game. Everything else will require you to stop and grind.

The Rune system in Suikoden is much better since runes unlock new skills based on your character level, not grinding AP points.

Why do people act like this is the worst news we've ever gotten? So many of you were saying they were restarting development and now we hear they're closer to done than even I honestly expected!

Kingdom Hearts III is coming out next year and has been in development longer so it's expected that FF7R wouldn't be as developed in any field. So for Nomura to come out and say that there's any part of FF7R further along than KH3 and that part to be the cutscenes which is arguably the part the takes the longest time to make, makes this news all the more significant.

There's also the last bit of news we got when they announced the shift to internal development and they used the reasons of wanting to control quality and "mass production" in the future. So many people misunderstood this to mean that they "hadn't even started developing the game yet" but do you know where else Square Enix has recently used this term? When they announced that Dragon Quest XI had gone gold and entered "mass production". This makes it sound like they're soon to be moving forward into polishing FF7R and preparing for it's eventual launch.

The weird thing about VII is how it shifts and tone and yet it doesn't feel jarring. Like you enter Corel and you find out Barrett is a social pariah and this entire game he's been running away from his personal history. And then you go up the plate and try to play some games at Gold saucer. And then it's off to prison where Barrett has to face his past once and for all. And then it's back to fun and games again. There's a lot of highs and lows. Like the Temple of the Ancients is the most tense part in the entire game second only to Aeris dying and it comes right after a second trip to Gold Saucer. The game lift you up and then drops you on the floor and then begins to lift you up again. It sounds terrible when you put it into words but it feels good when you're actually playing the game. Not to mention the attention to detail. Like how you wonder how Cloud was able to sneak up on Sephiroth and stab him and then you remember that he was equipped with the pre-emptive materia that allows him to sneak up on enemies. I honestly don't know. Both because it was always a difficult decision that I would often change, and because it has been such a long time it is hard to remember now.

Vincent probably spent the most hours in my party second to Cloud himself. I used him for hands free grinding, because his limits restore his health, preventing a game over if I'm away from the controller.

Barret and Tifa both get a lot of use from taking the first spots in my party and being the ones I got used to first. I feel like I default to Barret more though. Maybe it's because Tifa had boobs too large.

I tend to want to use Nanaki because I like him as a character, but I don't know that he's that useful, so I think he gets swapped out a lot.

Yuffie would be a given even just off of sex appeal alone, but when I first played I didn't know how to get her so of course I didn't start using her until much later.

Cid unfortunately appears too late in the game. By the time you get him, you've probably already gotten very comfortable with the characters you've been working on, and don't have much room left for another.

I basically never used Cait Sith. He was a dumb goofy traitor that had no worthwhile qualities to my 13 year old self.

So favorite, non-Cloud, party members for the characters themselves would probably be Yuffie and Nanaki, but for convenience and gameplay would be Barret and maybe Yuffie or Vincent.

Doesn't really make a difference. Initially the Steam version was shit because they decided to only include Midi music but it's been patched since then and is essentially the same experience as PS1.

Steam version has cleaner, brighter graphics which I think look horrible and remove the appeal f the PS1 aesthetic, but you can get a mod to change them back.

It can't be replicated. When I read this anons post here it makes me realize some things on why it worked.

1. There is no voice acting.
2. You are listening to the amazing soundtrack play.
3. The character models are chibi, more cartoony.

Take what that anon said and try to apply that to what the remake would be like. Where instead of reading what the characters say in those moments you will be listening to them. Where instead of seeing goofy funny looking character models you are going to be seeing pseudo realistic CGI character models. Even if they use the same music, would it be appropriate if they are talking over it?

FFVII again, truly was a product of its time. It isn't going to be replicated no matter how much fanboys want to believe the remake can do it. The remake will give people some different emotions playing it but it is stupid to expect the same exact feelings that FFVII original gave through out the game.

It might not be all bad necessarily though. REmake and RE1 is a good example of an original game and the remake that are both still good even if they both have many differences. REmake voice acting isn't funny while RE1's is perhaps the funniest voice acting in gaming history. Same game, will give different feels. So expect the same for FFVII and the remake.

He's was a hero of sorts from what I recall when I was little. When Cloud begins to tell his story he's introduced as extremely capable, cool and confident as a person. As the story goes on it takes a dark turn, with him realising he has no idea of sort of person he is. His entire personal history was a fabricated one, and in eventuality learns/believe he is some half human half Mako monster.

It was my first video game RPG, as in many people thought it was over as soon as we left MIdgar.
The Span of it first time going through was amazingly enormous. It will be burned into memory.
Characters were the best part, you had all of the archetypes represented. [Locales come second.

The Golden Saucer could be fun if not for the game forcing you to stay there several times, everything in it costing GP that you have to grind clunky, annoying mini-games to get decent amounts of, and having to not only do those mini-games to get GP, but then use that GP to do another annoying mini-game many times over to get Cloud's level 4 limit break. By the end of all that, I hated it.

It's a defensive gun against ships for their naval base. They're not aiming it at Wutai themselves. It's pretty straight forward, you don't need to make it more complex. The Sister Ray was only able to fire all the way to the Northern Creator by supercharging it with Midgar's power.
