They're easy exactly because they don't require you to think much. They're all about recognizing patterns in the AI and mechanics. Simply put, once you figure out a strategy that works, you can usually do nothing but that and always win.

Grand Strategy is all learning obtuse mechanics. I love eu4/ck2/dh/df too but I've seen retarded friends dump hundred of hours into these games as well.

These games aren't hard at all to learn or to master, it just requires patience and a rigid trial-and-error approach.

By the time you're taking on France, Spain and England/Britain, they have colonies, which means you have to capture colonies to earn enough Warscore to take their final homeland areas. I managed to start taking Spain and 95% of France before time ran out. I was fucking filthy rich and nobody could come close to beating me in battle.

This. I've dropped 30-100 hours into most of the Paradox games, but now they've just turned into blob-central.

I think the very start of these games, when still learning the mechanics, is some of the most fun I've had in singleplayer games, but the freshness quickly disappears.

At the very beginning, the wealth of systems and mechanics creates the illusion of playing in a very deep simulation against an intelligent AI. But once you get a grasp of the basics and have read the wiki for how the mechanics work together, it quickly just feels like basic games with feature bloat and the AI becomes very easy to outsmart.

I'm very bummed that they've started to casualise their new releases, as this just makes the illusion of depth evaporate much quicker. (HOI4, Stellaris)

I really don't get how some people can throw hundreds of hours into HOI4 when it quickly becomes nothing but a power fantasy simulator void of any greater challenge.

Speaking of Crusader Kings II. I've fucked up my current game beyond repair. The game is really fucking slow and the kingdom of Sweden has fucked it's own name over at least three times.

I think CK2 especially is meant to be played as an RPG, so just try to get into the mood and headcannon along with your playthrough.

I've just stepped into the realm of strategy/4x games and am currently playing Age of Wonders III.

It really is.

They've almost completely cut flavour in order to make it a arcady quickmatch (multiplayer) experience. After being disappointed by HOI4 I went back to learn Darkest Hour, and the difference is shocking. For example, after enacting some of the historical decisions as Germany, the old radio broadcasts with Hitler's speeches and live British translations start playing without further ado. Such a small touch, but the effect on immersion is stunning.

You can sort of see what they're trying to do with HOI4, sacrificing immersion for a competitive experience. I prefer the immersion aspect, but I wouldn't be too upset if the game turned out to be a deep and challenging war game well suited for both single- and multiplayers. Too bad they declared themselves completely unable to create a competent AI and balanced gameplay, both of which are paramount for a competitive experience.

The worst thing about HoI4 is how utterly gutted the diplomacy is. Some of the things that should be basic features only happen due to particular events.
