even performing a character's "bread and butter" in a vacuum is challenging to me. just pulling off the inputs correctly and with the right timing is very tough.

The thing to know about pretty much all fighting games is that the games only register 8 directions, plus neutral.
No analog, all digital.
All you have to do is hit the general directions you need to, in order, reasonably quickly, then press the button you want at the end of the motion. These days, games are fairly lenient about commands.
