It's an amalgamation of hype, marketing, huge modding community, and the game being friendly to both casual and hardcore players. The base game itself is pretty shallow, but the fact that you can do so much shit with it makes it worth playing for a lot of people.

Pretty much the entire main story line are gates that lead to areas just like that. They outsourced their dungeon design in Oblivion so everything is really generic.

The right way to play Oblivion is to ignore the main story line and go join either the Mages guild, the Darkbrotherhood, the Theives Guild, or the Fighters Guild as these are the only place that Oblivion outshines other games in the series.

More people can tell you about awsome missions they did in the dark brotherhood or talk about the adoring fan than they can tell you what the final boss looks like.

I own Oblivion but visually speaking the game is pretty unappealing to me. Game play is pretty lackluster too. Personally, can't wait for Skyblivion to come out, my biggest concern is if they're going to keep the combat as it was from Skyrim into Oblivion, that was probably the most horrible aspect of that game for me.

I did the arena,fighters guild, and Dark Brotherhood when I played it. Didn't really get around to mages and progression in thieves guild got too grindy. My favorite quest was the dark brotherhood whodunit quest.

I was replaying New Vegas because I never played Lonesome Road.

It's pretty mediocre vanilla wise but mods allow you to literally do anything. If wasn't for the god awful combat I'd probably never set foot in another RPG again, but as it stands I'm stuck in a limbo where I uninstall and then reinstall it a few months later.
