I find it interesting how Skullgirls occupies such an interesting place. It's either too sexy or not sexy enough for normies and cultists alike.

The core FGC is a fairly conservative group. I argue that a lot of Skullgirls current, and future fanbase, comes from outside the traditional FGC.
Basically, people that weren't already being attracted to the genre by the offerings of many other traditional fighters.

That's why you see a lot of top SG players that came from Smash, or considered SG their first "real" fighting game.

It's a pretty sizeable group too. Just look at how quickly SG hit its crowdfunding goals versus the Arcana Heart KS currently running.
And a lot of these people have still come back years later to support the PS4 Release, Combo Breaker crowdfunds, the LRG Pre-Order goal for JPVO, and of course, Indivisible.

DoA and Skullgirls are at EVO, just not main stage. Pretty much every fucking game is at EVO, in some capacity, including something like fucking Catherine.
The thing is that DoA and Skullgirls just don't have enough players to warrant big, main stage attention, and that is, in part, due to the overt sexuality/overwhelmingly waifu-centric nature turning people off on the game.
Mr. Wizard likes his money, and if SG or DOA had huge amounts of players and viewers that come out to play and watch, respectively, you could bet your ass that they would get main stage, but that simply isn't the case.
If SG was a bit more like GG or BB, that struck a balance between waifus and a varied male roster, then I could imagine it would have a fair bit more players. Though I still see it being very niche even then. It's still Marvel without Marvel and would still have had a very rocky launch and few characters due to how much animation they do for just one.

Mike Z needs character assets before he can make a character, and Lab Zero's artists need time and money to make assets, and they need to cast and record a voice actor and ect, ect. The only reason he could make Fukua at all was due to the fact that the assets were already all there, including some stuff that was unused. Hell, Fukua as a thing only came about because way early in development when they had basically just Fillia sprites, they had a few different versions of her to test shit, in particular a grappler version and a zoner version.

Here's the thing; I can dig waifu fighters. I can play me some fucking Skullgirls, Arcana Heart, Nitroplus, Melty. Hell, I could play me some fucking EFZ, but expecting a waifu fighter to be main stage EVO, or even big with the general fighting game populace, is just delusional just due to sheer demographics.
