I liked persona 4, the only one I played, but that game is more style than substance, I liked the characters and music a lot but the gameplay istelf is nothing to write home about, dungeon design is mediocre, just halways, and the battle system is nothing new, although I have to give them credit since status effects you cause on the enemy are actually useful unlike many other JRGPs, even on bosses.

On topic, I'd say Xenoblade 1 is up there, maybe it lacked in the graphics department but at the same time it was impressive what they managed to create on the Wii.

Maybe combat is a bit straighforward at times but the A.I. on some characters could use some fucking work, would be tits as a multiplayer game too.

The plot was very simple but effective at the same time. Yahtzee described it best that the central backstory, "aliens blew up earth and the last survivors of humanity crash landed on an alien planet and have to recover the lost parts of their ship", is a simple and effective maypole that you can then have all the characters, plot and other various story arcs dance around nicely. In execution they kind of messed up by focusing too much on Elma and Lin which then meant that if any other character did anything you just didn't really care about them because you hadn't seen enough of them.
What they should have done was:

It'd give you a lot more reason to care about moments where one of them dies or betrays you or does ANYTHING if you actually had a chance to see more of them as a character.
