What mod should I get, if I just want to play the Call of Pripyat campaign?

Try to travel a bit light. Being up near your carry limit will drain your stamina like a motherfucker, and running the hell away is often a pretty good idea. Don't be too stingy about using supplies, either. If a single enemy is giving you problems don't hesitate to chuck a grenade just to deal with them, for example.

In SoC and CS you can bind medkits and bandages. See controls settings.
In CoP you can bind any 4 items.

What are some good graphics mods for Stalker?

I just tried OGSE and I don't know what the fuck they've done with regards to ambient occlusion, but the game looks like hot garbage, the foliage/grass is just completely fucked, harsh black outlines on a lot of shit etc

OGSE has some messed up almost cell shading going on with the grass, start with reducing image sharpening (right at the bottom of the advanced graphics settings) or just disable Global Illumination altogether.

Yes, as well as >>384580838 has detailed, there are hidden caches everywhere in the goddamn zone just waiting for your grubby hands to raid them.

Also if you go back to Cordon, in the starter town;
The house on the left nearest the exit to the village, heading towards the road, has a merc suit in a roof hole/crate if I remember correctly, great armour for game start. You'll have to work your way to the roof by jumping from the adjacent one behind it, save as you might hit the ground if you miss.

Also if possible kill those military guys at the overpass, one of them has a unique rendition of the pistol above your little pea-shooter.
Just hide in the bushes and pistol-snipe, save scum if you have to.

Make sure to get your AK fitted out with a scope as soon as possible. The fast-firing AK in Agropom Underground is a great candidate; better accuracy, better fire rate, shoot them from a distance and take off their heads before they're a threat. Makes the game real easy.

Trust me, play the factions for your safety. Help them a little, and you should be able to use them as safety nets for any mutants or Monolith you find. Monolith is a bitch by the way, prepare yourself; even the Military isn't that bad.

Consult this Starting Guide,

Play in the release order. Start with no mods - only latest patch, OR get the full "Starter Pack" first; these contain bug-fixers and light visual mods that can help performance as well.
Leave big overhauls for later playthrougs. Avoid the "Complete" -mods. Always play on MASTER difficulty for best realism and atmosphere, and disable crosshair.

Don't give up in the beginning! The starting gear sucks ass and first area can be a bit boring.
