I personally enjoy it. I'm 140 IQ. I can come up with a story that is much, much better than any "video games writer."

I like games that do a mix of both. I think overall I prefer "silent" protagonists with dialogue options that can actually effect the game (ie persona, chrono cross, akiba's trip). I like games that feel open but still have a heavier layer of linearity than skyrim. It's hard to achieve a good balance of story telling, gameplay, and player input.

Dark Souls did it well
