Like, yeah, the main centers of game development are western and eastern culturally, but as OP points out, there are plenty of western games styled after eastern culture and vis versa: Why are fucking none of them based on, say, precolumbian american culture?

European history is rich with battles, wars, plagues, tragedies, allies, enemies, inventions, and numerous other things. The middle ages lasted for a thousand years so it's used a lot in fiction because it's hard not to be influenced by it.

It's probably a carryover from tge mid 80s/early 90s. Back in the day, Japanese devs we're copying the style of Wizardry-like RPGs.
