Is there any reason why Japanese fantasy games are based on european folklore and culture instead of Japanese?
>>
Be course stone castles looks better than bamboo ones.
>>
Because it all comes from D&D which comes from LOTR

>bamboo castles

uh, you don't know shit about medieval japan.
>>
the modern JRPG is based on Wizardry IV
>>
Because western shit is exotic to them

The better question is: Why is it always fucking european and asian?

Like, yeah, the main centers of game development are western and eastern culturally, but as OP points out, there are plenty of western games styled after eastern culture and vis versa: Why are fucking none of them based on, say, precolumbian american culture?

In AnyCase Burger/Eurofaggot's markets much bigger than Japanese. Also not everyone psyched about Medieval Nippon, but medieval Western Europe is like a "own" history.
>>
>>384560587
Because their concept of what they call fantasy is based directly off western fantasy. Theres plenty of japanese games with fictional worlds full of youkai and ninjas capable of superhuman feats.
>>
>>384560587
Yes, more games need to be based on american folklore and culture.
>>
>>384561154
Because most of what we do know is more or less speculation since the spanyards killed most of them to steal their gold. And not only that we know very little about them.
>>
because the first JRPGs were heavily influenced by WRPGs, particularly Wizardry. That set a trend which subsequent games followed

the few times they do it, they do it right.

it's sort of hard to explain. We essentially did have an entirely third branch of human history destroyed in addition to western and eastern, but it's not like we know fucking nothing either.
>>
>>384564704
Yeah, I guess so, not to mention the posibility of other cultures we do nit even know about that have ceased to exist
>>
>>384560587
European history is rich with battles, wars, plagues, tragedies, allies, enemies, inventions, and numerous other things. The middle ages lasted for a thousand years so it's used a lot in fiction because it's hard not to be influenced by it.
>>
It's probably a carryover from tge mid 80s/early 90s. Back in the day, Japanese devs we're copying the style of Wizardry-like RPGs.
>>
>>384565167
>we're
>>
Because the only culture Japan has is "muh samurai" and that stuff isn't as diverse as European fantasy.
>>
HAHA WOW NOBUNAGA-SAMA ISN'T IN THIS GAME GUESS WE CAN'T MAKE A HISTORICAL JAPANESE GAME

Yeah i remember when midgar was overun with the black plague and came crashing down.
Or how the europeans were the first to build a time machine and travel through with a talking frog.

White people are amazing.

FF7 is like a weird mix of European fantasy and sci-fi, it's an original world but it doesn't really have a solid vision.

This.
The archetypal medieval setting is a trope.
Evil wizard is a trope.
Princess in peril is a trope.
Destined hero is a trope.
Magic sword is a trope.
Scary dungeons are a trope.

These ideas are sellable because they're popular culture and have mass market appeal.
>>
>>384560587
Because "fantasy" is the most boring and derivative genre in all of fiction.
