That's a bit of a stretch, but you were very good

It was made with a lot of love, but it's also unfortunately still held back a bit by the weaker layout of Metroid 2's map.

Not the developers' fault of course. They were just working from a wonky template.

Yeah its suffers from what something like Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon. Many of its flaws were because they were very faithful remakes and with that came with many of the flaws of the original. Though the new bosses and re-imagined areas while keeping similar layouts were nice. Fighting nothing but Metroids the entire game with no other bosses with a big problem with Metroid 2.

Wondering how faithful Nintendo will be to the original in terms of map design.

The later parts of the game vary the map design from the original quite a bit. AM2R isn't a 1:1 remake so the developer could have improved the map design a lot. Also he decided to add expansions and optional areas that require the player to backtrack quite a bit without properly connecting the world together. So I'd argue that the map was even more tedious to traverse (if you want to 100% the game) than it was in the original Metroid II, where you never really had to backtrack because the game was linear.

Having the different weapon types on the touchscreen is the most optimal way to include the grapple beam. If you cycled through missiles/super missiles/grapple beams with a button press like you did in Super/Fusion/Zero Mission then it would just be clunky. This allows you to switch to whatever beam you want instantly. And since they're on the very edge of the touch screen and they're large buttons, you can easily access them with your right hand during play.

Since this is the only Metroid thread around right now, does anyone know how I can get unstuck from this area? I just got the bombs but rather than go back to the navigation room I just kept booking it forward and I can't seem to find a way out.

I tried but that just leads me to rooms that are either filled with water and can't move worth shit or has walls set up that were even walljumping doesn't help. The only other room of note is a long corridor that has nothing in it, not even a door. I'm starting to think I've gotten myself into unbreakable corner.

Fusion is very linear, which means there's no way you're stuck because to actually get stuck would probably require a ton of glitches and exploits. Most likely there's just some small block or tunnel that you missed that you need to bomb to go through. Try following the natural flow of the map and then give a good scan of the deadend. If you're really stuck you could probably look up a playthrough.
