It's so annoying because the mechanics and QoL changes are so good in later gens but DPPt and HGSS are so much better looking despite being about a decade old.

Objectively incorrect. I agree the animations could definitely stand to be more lively, that's where Stadium has it beat. The main issue with the idles though is even though several Pokemon do have some nice idles, the idle animations are broken into two parts with the second being livelier, like the BW games, but unlike the BW games, they aren't part of a consistent loop, only cue up when idling when selecting your move so it can seamlessly transition into attack animations, and the changing camera angles when idling make it very likely you won't be able to see the full animations. Those livelier second parts also don't appear in status menus, while I'm fairly certain they do in the BW games.

Personally I think Gen VI is way more aesthetic than any of the DS titles, especially HGSS which really kills me because I love the look of GSC and still think that Crystal looks the best, but Gen VII's changes to the lighting engine ruin the looks each Gen VI game had going on.

I think either way regarding the model quality they end up being shown on a 240p screen which ruins them completely. The spritework was able to be designed around that limitation and looked crisp all the time in the gen 4 games.
Were the animation done better in gen 5 then they would have looked better but they abused stretch all over the place which just doesn't work on low-res sprites.

As well the biggest issue with idles is that many of them are barely even animations, egregiously on a lot of flying pokemon that I suppose are meant to look like they're gliding, which doesn't work on entirely stationary models.
Never understood why the player doesn't animate at all in gen 7 either. Every other character gets expressions but the player has a blank stare even when he gets thrown into another dimension to fight beasts from beyond.

I think most of the models get by fine on the low resolution, and it helps make the cel-shading work as it does, but it has the drawback of the proportion choices made in-game and several Pokemon do have issues with the lower resolution, like certain details getting scrunched up and illegible unless the game is zoomed in a ton on them.

As for the player in Gen VII, they probably want you to self-insert, but unlike Gen VI which also kept a straight face on the MC outside of full-on cinematics, there's several scenes where they put clear focus on the MC's face and it's even used once for comedic effect, so I really don't know what the fuck they were doing there.
