I'm the same, picked it up after having not played one since PiT.
Honestly, I found it really boring.

>great combat that requires you to git surprisingly gud at times
>great music
>shallow as fuck overworld/dungeons crammed with tutorials and babby-tier minigames
>writing and humor has its moments but feels more "forced" than earlier mario rpgs
It's alright. Bowser's Inside Story is still my favorite

Genuine complaints?

Too many tutorials...not that thy bothered me
Overly flashy bros attacks that take too long
Gyro controls in giant battles can be extremely wonky and unresponsive at times
Game is about 10-15 hours longer than it needs to be...specially that mountain

Still had fun myself.

the handholding NEVER FUCKING STOPS and that cloud npc never shut the fuck up
its not a bad game but its not stellar either, its ok if free

It's my personal favorite. It seems to get a lot of shit. but I never really understood why (for the most part. Those tutorials are out of control). Though if you haven't played BiS, you definitely should.
