Replaying this for the 3rd time and it's as glorious as ever. Thing is I just got the Claimh Solais and it just trivializes the rest of the game. Are there any decent weapons that are actually decent but won't make the game to easy? i've been using the Mystletain for a while and its great so far.
Anyway, Castlevania thread. Discuss, post them filters, etc.

On accident? Either way, damn. At least you get some good experience and souls early as well.
Did it affect Hammer's shop any though?
>>384481790
How did they even miss that.
>>384482075
Maybe they patched it later in one of those 1.1 releases, like for the doublepack with HoD.
>>384481790
Rather, after Great Armor. I always forget that thing is a boss. Once you get the double jump from him though, you can really get around.
>>384482035
It was on purpose. I've played the game too many times to do it normally again. I didn't think to check Hammer's shop very quickly afterward so I don't know if it was different from usual.
>>384481790
I literally cannot beat death and I'm pulling my hair out. Why the fuck does his second form do so much damage. Why the fuck is the spinning scythe so hard to dodge
>>384482075
Corners of platforms have rounded edges, probably just to make platforming a bit smoother. I guess they didn't realize that means you could clip onto that one from the side, though.
>>384482352
For the second form, if he throws it in the middle, just duck. It'll look like it'll hit you but it shouldn't. Otherwise, he'll boomerang it around, in which case it's pretty easy to time when to jump over it, or do some other attack, I don't remember, so it's probably easy enough to dodge.

Does this happen in Legacy of Darkness a.k.a the better N64 game too?
>>384484405
Thanks. I was very specifically looking for HD footage of Legacy of Darkness. For some reason, everything on Youtube is low resolution muddy mess. And Games Done Quick did a direct capture from an N64, meaning it's hella blurry.
I would love to see Legacy of Darkness built in a new 3D engine, giving it 60fps, and better camera controls.

i hate the grind for souls in this game, mostly because there's no way to stop experience gains so by the time you get souls that you want you've also gained several levels along with your new ability

Why use "ludo" as if it is the vidya equivalent of "kino"? "Ludo" comes from the latin word "ludus" for game, while "kino" is the german derivative of "cinema", which is of greek origin.
Why not just use "vidya"? It is a shorthand for "video games" the same way "kino" is a shorthand for "cinema", while no one actually uses anything related to "ludus" when talking about vidya in day to day life.

>>384486853
I used Alucard's sword and spammed its special attack. You are invincible during the animation, and if you time it perfectly, you can flow from attack to attack, making you literally immortal. Probably not the best tactic, but was able to beat him at a fairly low level.
>>384512268

In Portrait of Ruin you use 2 characters, a traditional weapon user and a witch.
>>384513414
>Considering SotN extends its length via inverted castle, this is a good thing.
Inverted Castle was great. All new enemies, with new patterns, and the castle is all opened up. It takes much less time to beat, and feels like a boss rush. You can view the game as progressively giving you more and more freedom as you go. At first you have one path to go. Then you have two. Then you have 3 or more potential paths. Then there's optional areas. Then they give you this entire Castle and you can go in every direction.

>>384513597
My biggest problem is that the platforming is incredibly dull in that entire section.
>>384514128
at that point it's hardly about platforming anymore. considering you can fly, double jump, super jump and super dash, you barely have to touch the ground if you don't want to.
>>384482352
bitch pls. when he rotates it and makes it go through the whole area just double jump in the middle to dodge it. at the same time you can smash his back in since he's vulnerable and only waiting for the scythe to come back.

Not really. I am actually quite optimistic and am pretty excited for it.
I can past it being ugly as fuck and the demos have been good as far as gameplay is concerned.
But even if it was to end up absolutely amazing. It still wouldn't be Castlevania. Castlevania as we know it would still be over. And the best one could hope for then would be for Bloodstained build itself into a respectable franchise following the first game.

The funny thing about playing that way is it gives you a tiny bit of boost right after you wall-jump, so it's possible to scale one wall (very slowly). This allowed me to do a neat sequence break and fight Camilla early on in the game.

The big draw of Metroidvanias are the giant interconnected mazelike maps that you explore and uncover as you gain abilities, the whole genre is defined by the kind of exploration that Super Metroid and SotN share despite gameplay/tone differences
Don't get me wrong, I love Castlevania gameplay, its probably the reason most "metroidvanias" fail to scratch the itch for me since they often opt for far simpler/slower gameplay. That said, it was such a bummer going into OoE with some new mechanics just to be greeted by like 20 linear hallways that don't even pretend to be connected, then once you get to the proper castle, which is what the whole game should've been like, the game ends the next minute. I don't even get to explore the world and find these places since they're not connected, I'm given a road to walk before I get the choice to walk in a different straight line.
I don't even mind multiple maps/levels, I just wish they where fleshed out, PoR had a nice balance even if some of the paintings fell into a bit of a formula on the layouts, but there where fewer areas than OoE and each where more than a few rooms in what amounts to a straight line.
OoE castle was amazing, I would've much preferred the rest of the game had been condensed to a few, equally diverse and expansive areas. Could still work with the way progress is set up, instead of having a bunch of outdoor or mountain maps have one big mountain/forest which you enter through different spots and slowly fill out.Or just have the whole damn world interconnected to begin with like its always been

I need new metroidmanias to play, already played all the well-known ones. Ori's okay and Environmental Station Alpha is good but it's balls to the walls hard. Rabi Ribi is alright too but the faggoty aesthetic is too much. I liked Guacamemele but there's not really any replay value in it. I'm replaying Aria of Sorrow now but I've done it so many times it's stale.

It sounds like the issue you have is not really the inclusion of the map so much, but the linear design of some areas.

In the Dark World everybody was cursed into animals, enemies were tougher, dungeons were more complex. Castle B had nothing going for it, just more empty corridors with worse palettes. Castle A is already bloody, gothic, and chaotic, there's no coherent shift in tone when you get to B. You just blindly stumble into it halfway through Castle A so there's not even a marked difficulty increase. It sucks.

That's the problem though, if the map isn't connected then what is the fucking point of these corridors you'll never visit again?
Before the whole map was a physical space so you can't get to point a to b without going through the spacein between, so every room is on the road to another. That one hallway has a bit of purpose and is at least considered just a small part of a bigger whole (the area itself and in turn the entire castle). I go through it cause i want to get to the other side, and its supplementary to the exploration of the map.
In OoE the connection is artificial and artbitrary, i go through the forest because it decided i needed to before i got to the next unrelated area, and after that I'll never touch it again, then why even make the forest? It doesn't end on a boss nor does it even build up to anything. What game could get away with an area or level thay simple and worthless? The level structure is retarded, being neither good as a metroidvania nor good as a level based platformer

Level/enemy design is half the battle though and its nowhere near as tight as the original games to justify the linear structure. Its still designed as a metroidvania hallway, but it has non of the exploration that made that kind of room work and doesn't do nearly enough to even be considered a level, let alone one comparable to classicvania levels, or any platformer level in the first place. The player and enemies are still metroidvania styled too so you have all kinds of abilities, items and shit at your disposal so you still don't need the same mastery you would need over the tight gameplay of the classic CVs (that would require you to beat a set of rooms in succession before gaining access to the next, having to start all over if you fuck up enough, like a fucking level)
I mean what if Rondo chopped up its levels by rooms/sections, suddenly you have a ton of starting points and the game is much easier, basically free save states.
This wouldn't be a problem if it picked a goddamn side and did what worked for it, but OoE was already far into the metroidvania camp so I wish it did it right.
It fails at both exploration and at standard levels, its a disservice to the good gameplay.
I just noticed that randomizer doesn't actually work properly for AoS.
If you get the good weapons/souls right away, then the game is easy as fuck and you're overpowered.
If you don't, then it's just the normal game anyway.
The souls-only challenge thing that the randomizer includes seems cool but I apparently failed to activate that since I'm still getting weapons.

I'm actually not that intiat classicvanias, i appreciate them but mostly enjoy the metroidvanias, which is why OoE's first half was so disappointing to me, and why I adored the castle section so much, I wish it was all like that.
The point was that shit like the woods or swamp hallway don't count as levels, just simply connecting all these peicemeal maps would go a long way to make either a map you can actually explore (with save points in between) or a proper linear level (lives, gameovers, restart)
If you somehow manage to die at the swamp you will have to restart it, but its such a short section its not any kind of punishment or challenge and omce its through you never have to go through it again. In a metroidvania you can go back through old rooms with new skills, and in classic games you have to clear each room anytime you replay a level, but OoE's halway levels are literally one time and worthless, bar entire replays

>>384537226
I think it needs to be said, but I don't hate OoE, i enjoyed it plenty. I am however very critical of its first half's level structure, for reasons I've laid out. The gameplay is good, the game is challenging, the series needed a refresher, I won't deny any of that, I just disliked how the early areas worked. If there is any fault in my logic, or some element of the overall game design which would justify and reedem these levels, go ahead and point it out.
I bring up the Castlevania's that take after the original as they are a good point of comparison between the level structures, and OoE's more linear sections plus its challenge are often touted as a return to form or mixture of the two styles. I brought up the merit in both styles, and really only criticised OoE on how its level structure failed both. Maybe its a bad assumption to say it was meant to be like both, but that still leaves half the game as a shit metroidvania instead of shit at both (level wise anyways).
I think simple hallways and enemy placement have merit and worth in the context of metroidvania and its exploration based maps, and only brought them up to contrast how OoE's level structure robbed them of any worth they might've had by chopping them up individually, without even giving them an alternative worth, like being part of a challenging old style level.

The ones that do are Aria of Sorrow, Dawn of Sorrow, and Portrait of Ruin.
Aria and Dawn follow the "bad ends" with Julius (and Yoko and Alucard in Dawn) hunting down Soma.
Portrait of Ruin has the Sisters Mode which is follows the Sisters chasing after their father, prior to the events of the game.
Every other mode has no story at all and are purely for gameplay.

>>384544727
Well it's like I said. The plots are paper thin.
In Aria there's no dialogue what-so-ever. IIRC you don't even fight Soma. I may be wrong about it following the bad end of the game and may just be a purely for gameplay bonus mode.
In Dawn, there's some dialogue at the start, and a few comments as you find and recruit Yoko and Alucard, and then a few more when you finally confront and defeat Soma in an exclusive boss battle.
In Portrait there are only comments at the very start and the very end of Sisters mode.
Arguably the most interesting one would be Dawn's Julius mode, I suppose.

I enjoy running it with the handgun every now and again. It's still easy, but a bit different.
Do a no souls run. No claimh Solas automatically.
>>384549214
Where will he go next?
>>384548370
BONEYYYYY KICKU!
>>384549405
>hangun
I love any unconventional/gag weapons in castlevania, nothing like just fucking shooting demons, punching them in the face or bashing them with a stuffed bear
>>384550085
Oh god damnit, there's going to be hundreds of them running around the station now.
>>384550285
Not if Soma has something to say about it
>>384550085
imagine what neo-bones would look like
Best Castlemania thread ever
I'm helping to run this meme into the ground
>>384551546
Fighting the good fight, bone brother
>>384551623
too far
>all of these edits using a version of him with a rock over the bottom of his spine that shouldn't be there
>>384551846
That's his propulsion dust. It was in the original, so shall it be in all images henceforth.
>>384551846
wrong image, but fitting anyways
here's what he should look like
>>384551846
I think that's a bone nub
>>384536648
There's two forest maps dude, the rest have reasons to revisit.
>>384551846
Its apparently one of his dust clouds, and if you ask me, anything deviating from the original "worst Castlemania" image won't cut it. I specifically use the one from the image, dust cloud and all, it adds charm, and every detial matters.
Without it it all falls apart, can you even call it worst castlemania at that point?
>>384552018
Oh, that makes sense
>>384533442
I like it
It's kinda like some sort of "lost levels" version of Rondo
It's harder too
>castlevania threads hitting bump limit
bones is truly the savior we needed
>>384552647
Did you miss all of the threads over the last 2 weeks that hit the bump limit because the Netflix series came out?
did they say if Grant would be in the netflix series?
>>384478501
