If you buy the base game, you get 30 days of sub time. At least I did when I played the Steam version. The game is worth playing at least a month. And at the end of that time, you can decide if you want to pay a sub/buy expansions.

When it comes to my actual review of the game, I'd say I enjoy it for everything but the story. The story and characters are a collection of cliches from all other FF games. And as a result, they are so bad, it's facepalm worthy. But the setting, atmosphere, music, classes and gameplay keep me playing. Well, that and how funny it is to be a lalafell and show up all the other races.

People in the game constantly bombard you with guild requests if they see you have no guild. Just join a random free company (guild) and see if you like those people. I got lucky and the first one I accepted was a pretty decent one. But of course, it goes both ways. You need to be willing to talk in FC chat and go on the occasional roulette. I tried FFXIV and WoW a little bit last year but didn't really get into them. I just signed up for the FFXIV free trial and am going to try it again. I can't choose a race, though. I want to play either hyur, lalafell, or miqo'te. I think the trial is probably better than buying it to try it because you can play for as long as you like up to level 35 on all classes (so I hear).

I have played human, elf and lala. I have far more fun as a lala because you have a totally different perspective of the world. Being less than half the size of any other race sounds like it would be a major disadvantage. But the developers make sure every race jumps the same height, runs at the same speed and etc. But as a result, this means Lalafells can jump 3x their own height and run 3x faster than other races. The story is also hillarious when everyone is worshiping you as the savior of the world and huge Roegadyn that are 10x your body mass are asking you for tips on how to become stronger. If you really want to laugh yourself silly, play a lalafell Dragoon. The whole Heavensward story becomes a huge running gag.

Aside from race, I had the most fun playing Dragoon, White Mage and Bard. And all the gathering classes. Didn't really like Black Mage because of its mana rotation and absolutely hate the pet classes, but you might like them. Just try any class. Leveling from 1-15 takes maybe 2 hours tops.

Nah, LCR gets a 4 hit combo + buffs before level 30. Every DPS class has at least one rotation. Now a healer like WHM just spams stone and Aero. Doesn't really have an attack rotation. Their whole rotation is in healing, so it only comes up in dungeons/trials.

If you want to feel useful, tank is going to be the class you need to play. They have to take command, lead the group, call all the shots, avoid every bubble and protect the healer. Healer has to keep the tank alive and pray the DPS actually stay alive. DPS just has to do their rotation correctly and move out of bubbles.

I tried a one run with random pugs. Didn't get much past second element suffle.
I can't think and press buttons at the same time so I kept getting pushed out of the arena. Healers seemed to have hard time with incoming damage and tanks (me included) forgot to pop cooldowns for the twin lightning.

I have never played other theme park MMos so I don't know if this is the standard, but this game sucks. It is all artificial content with little variety. There is barely any difference between jobs of the same role, and every dungeon pans out the same. They prevent unique approaches to content by adding things like DPS checks in boss fights. The story is awful and the world is really generic too. It just piggybacks on the good ideas from other FF (mainly VI) and then prays that will make the world interesting. The story is literally just one person doing everything while a handful of people support them. The cutscenes are dull and most of them are very static.

The only way they can keep people playing is by putting arbitrary restrictions on how often you can get drops from certain content.

It's endgame is absolute garbage compared to any other MMO I've played, which is a shame because this game has extreme potential. The current savage tier was cleared in less than a day, and the playerbase is so obsessed with being bad that the developers balance around it. class depth is pretty shit and stormblood has been nothing but a disappointment so far. You might get some enjoyment while you explore all the new stuff, but once you start getting further into the game you really see how shallow it is.

Just make it work until you get to 70. They changed DRG in SB and It makes the lower level stuff wonky. But what you should do is open with chaos combo, then do 2 full thrust combos and you'll be back at time to reapply your heavy thrust.

when two people in my static had to leave we got new people (we were all brand new to raiding at the time and got to a11s), and they were all shit and refused to learn, even after talking to them about improving their rotation and giving them help. The top end raiders in this game are the most autistic dick measuring contest faggots I've ever seen. Because everyone wants to be world first, or second, or third or even place, they'll form circle jerks and never let anyone else in or teach anyone else in order to increase their shot of getting a fast clear. As a result the raiding scene is locked to less than 5% of the player base because of how hard iris to get into

Which is why the vast majority of people cry that there's no content; high end raids aren't enough.

What's the simplest class to play? Are there any characters that mostly just auto-attack? Every time I try to get into FF14 I eventually get to the point where every fight is rapidly spamming like 10+ abilities and it gets so boring I stop.

FFXIV 1.2x had plenty of fun things to do mainly because it followed FFXI's design decision. Off the top of my head those Grand Company missions were like this.

Grab quest > Go to dungeon > Learn dungeon > Optimize path > Decide on loot routes > Learn boss mechanics > Earn more loot.

It took a week and a half to fully complete ONE single dungeon and it didn't had any form of restriction or weekly limits. The funny part about this is that it was a single goddamned Grand Company mission there were plenty like it.

Honestly, T9 isn't that crazy if you go in with a stupid echo amount. You would need someone to explain the Mario Kart and how to stand to not get one shot by the pillar, but it could be done. I imagine that the later coil fights would have to get toned down if they were ever thrown in a roulette though, way too much instant kill mechanics for PUGs.

FFXIV is the most forgiving environment I've seen in an MMO. People will actively walk you through stuff if you label your party as practice or learning.

I mean shit, if you join a farm or clear party and don't know what's going on you're going to get kicked because that's a douche move, but learning parties are arguably too nice.
