I was starting to think that Zero Mission, AM2R, and Super were the perfect collective Metroid experience, but now I'm not so sure.

I think AM2R deserves a fair shake, though. Or maybe it's just because Metroid II was my first Metroid game.

AM2R isn't nearly as good as people make it out to be. It has a significant balance problem, the Metroid fights are full of poorly designed boss AI, and it doesn't really fix any of the problems that Metroid 2 had.
