Are lower polygon graphics actually bad, especially in rpgs? Or do they make your brain fill in the gaps, thereby creating a more nuanced role-playing experience?

Only retarded 13 year old nu-males give a fuck about graphics

Only if they affect the gameplay/story negatively because company has decided to spend 50 trillion on memes.
No
>>
Good graphics are nice.

But, you shouldn't let bad graphics get in the way of a good game.

This. Surprised to see a reasonable and succinct point in /v/ now-a-days.
>>
Graphics literally destroyed the video game industry

I fucking hate normies.
"WOW DUDE LOOK AT THOSE AMAZING SUPER REALISTIC GRAPHICS GOY WHILE THE GAMEPLAY AND THE GAME ITSELF IS PURE TRASH BUT YOU WILL ALL BUY IT ANYWAY BECAUSE DUDE LOOK AT THE GRAPHICS"

Every single E3

They are better
if you want to know how they are supposed to look in lore just look at the official art

Low Poly will be the new pixel art pretty soon. The Playstation kids are finally getting around to making games.

By this logic playing a 2D game or text based game is superior to fully rendered graphics because imagination.
The true answer is nobody cares about graphics in an RPG as long as the UI is reasonable.

>>384399168
these are videogames. VIDEO games. if you don't care about the visuals go play soccer or read a book or something.

What I meant by making this thread, is do lower polygon models and textures leave more to the imagination, and could that possibly be a good thing? While building up to total realism in graphics is commendable, it will become easier and easier to catch imperfections in that realism. Is it better to be immersed fully by perfect graphics? Or have our imagination make up for it? Can we be more immersed with the latter method?

shit graphics are obviously better

When I play a low poly game and I see a guy I don't see a low poly piece of shit looking guy, I see a normal guy in my mind. The in game model just represents him, but I see a realistic looking guy

Graphics do matter to a certain point, Fallout 3 gives me motion sickness for example.
>>
FF12 remaster looks amazing. Made me think what kinds of games we would have if they stuck with that level of tech.
>>
>>384400664
I just think PS2-tier models are good enough. Enough detail so things look like things, but not so much visual detail that things have to be cut out because their models aren't up to par
>>
>>384400664
high poly is not synonymous with realism. you can have stylized high poly just like you can have realistic (at least in terms of intent) low poly. i think from the perspective of most artists, high poly will always be better. low poly forces them to compromise on their vision in all sorts of ways (don't bring up modern "low poly" games where in fact there are tons of polygons they just have hard edges instead of smoothed ones). one problem with (genuinely) low poly art is that can often only look good from a few angles because so many details are being faked/flattened with textures and the illusion is ruined the second you swing the camera around a few degrees. another problem is that it's impossible to make any object smooth with few polygons so it encourages an angular artstyle, with as few round objects as possible. and angularity is fine, but it's not something i want in every game, smooth, rounded things are nice to look at as well (asses for instance). any way you slice it, i'm very glad that GPUs have continued to advance and give artists more freedom with what they create.

>implying obsession with visuals is a recent trend
Fuck off back to whatever circle jerk you came out of. Have you never heard of the bit wars and "WHOAH MANE, LOOK AT DEM XYZ-BIT GREEPHICZ! THAT'S LIKE TOTALLY RAD!" Visuals are as incremental to game design and the game play mechanics themselves.

Why don't you go play a text-based RPG? Or even better, go read a book.
>>
>>384398990
Graphics in a game is like a story in a porn movie. It's expected to be there, but it's not that important.

>Or do they make your brain fill in the gaps, thereby creating a more nuanced role-playing experience?
No, because imagination doesn't matter in an RPG.

Your argument does work for a horror game though, which is why the PS1 era horror games were the best. Rudimentary 3D technology was the sweet spot

Graphics != aesthetics

Learn what those terms are before using the word 'video' as synonym for 'graphics'

Graphics (from Greek γραφιkός 'graphikos', 'something written' e.g. autograph) are visual images or designs on some surface, such as a wall, canvas, screen, paper, or stone to inform, illustrate, or entertain.

Why not have a text only screen. Than you will fill in even more stuff!
