Do survival crafting games count or is that cheating?

If so, Starbound is the comfiest building game I've ever seen. If you've played or seen Terraria, which nearly everyone has, then Starbound is like that but with less bosses and a lot LOT more building materials and situations.

This might be a little biased game whoring but Starbound is a great game. It definitely fits the bill of comfy builder

too bad chucklefuck ruined the game after the alpha because their main coder got busted for kiddifiddlin on their forums.

after that entire incident the game development went downhill and on a hiatus for +1 year before they eventually ruined the game. Before : terraria in space, crafting + exploration main part of game

now: linear-main quest, optional crafting, progression-based exploration forced / pointless

this is true. my nostalgia still carries it through for me though, and it is just so soothing listening to the beautiful music while making your snow fortress on a tundra planet, or exploring that avian tomb for supplies. it doesn't need to be as good as it was for me. also, quest IS kinda intresting and fun on a first playthrough.

Just installed 200+ mods Mr.Howard thanks for the great stability with modding in fallout 4
>>
>>384406141
The entire charm of the game was ruined.

Literally exploration + crafting, no limitations, no handholding.

All removed to cater to a linear main quest, and for whatever reason the hub they introduced.

The hub is half-and-half okay, but removing the progression based stuff like having to summon and defeat the penguin to even get off your first system, and completely making crafting obsolete is what ruined the game.

Now it's a single-player, one-time mainquest game. All that "muh randomly generated universe", all for nothing.

I can't agree more here.

>crafting the distress beacon to summon the penguin ufo
This is how you get off a planet; build a cheap distress beacon, get the attention of a loser in a cheap ufo, and salvage his ship after you bust it with a bow and arrows. That was a fun way to start the game.
>Main quest
Poorly written, shitty characters in both design and personality, and no buildup between areas. "Go get me clues. Now go do this dungeon. Do it all again a few more times." What the flying fuck were they smoking with this? They had antagonistic penguins in UFOs; just abuse those as warmongering space pirates or some shit. Protecting planets from Penguins and destroying their bases would have been more fun that the shit we got.

The biggest offense is the "unique" monsters. There's so few unique monsters, and they're spread across every planet type. It takes literally MINUTES to make new parts for randomly generated monsters; just make a thousand parts and make Unique monsters only appear in dungeons and random encounters like the poptop farm.
>>
>>384403993
why aren't these ever in games/movies? I'm sick of art.
>>
>>384407543
They locked down their forum and website for a month, made 2 blogposts about it and after the court case was over they deleted everything relating to it.

Short of it is, their main coder got busted luring children on their forum, and is currently in jail a Chris Hansen worthy incident(s). Involving atleast one child confirmed getting molested.

after that chucklefish became a headless chicken, no coder for +1 year, and then they hired some fuckwad to damage control the game to not come off as complete failures.

that's why the game completely changed to what it is today.

How's Ark's water building? And any mods to increase or remove the engram limits? I like playing on solo. I'm fine even with an admin code or whatever. Alternatively, if I ignore tek and top tier shit, do I get enough engram points to get pretty much everything else?
>>
>>384405547
Yeah they really fucked up the design. Contrary to the point of this thread, there's actually pretty much no point to making a comfy base on any planet. You should just throw everything on your ship because you're going to spend the whole game hopping between planets, raping them for the next tier of resource, and then forgetting they ever existed.

Oh and fuck the main quest design. A procedurally generated game should not have fucking instanced content.
>>
>>384402442

i spent an hour last time someone asked trying to dig up the actual blogposts made on the official starbound website, but i'm not very proficient with the entire archive stuff.

It's several years old by now, and it certainly did happen.

They deleted p much everything relating to the topic off their forums and website, and articles made by journalists were retracted because of some SJW-indie conspiracy relating to the people working at chucklefish. Having friends with "gaming journalists" clears out your name pretty fast, considering they just send one e-mail into the email-chain and the hivemind responds by doing what they are told by their collegue.

Srry, but i've given up on finding a means of digging trough archives / google caches to find the stuff. I'm pretty sure you have to manually archive stuff like that anyway.

There is Raft. It's a free, small indie game where you start on a tiny raft in the middle of the ocean and have to grab driftwood and leaves and metal that floats by to expand the raft and build while maintaining your thirst and hunger. It's good free fun for a short while.

Depends entirely on where you're at in the game. Some areas near safe-rooms are benign areas with berries and harmless creatures (double points if you have tamed lizard friends with you) and not much else going on besides dropping water. Also Moon is nice being around if you have things to give her.

Of course, it doesn't stay that way for long, whether you venture out or stay and face the incoming red super-lizard(s).

Well, there's Raft, which is free and in alpha, but honestly it kind of loses its appeal once you've built up enough to have a row of dragnets and the game becomes too reliant on inventory management. There's always Minecraft, but it's got the same issue. Personally, I'd say Fallout 4 Survival mode with heavy mods is a pretty strong base-building game.
>>
I'd kill for more games that focus on preparation? I guess games that let you have a home base but everywhere else is filled with God knows what and potentially incredibly deadly
"gotta make sure I have absolutely everything before setting out to that area because who knows what's going to happen while I'm away from base" right now Rimworld caravans are quite fun
>>
>>384396738
Absolutely, but only on PC so you can mod the shit out of it. The baseline turret variety is embarrassing, and the limits on building materials kind of drags the experience down in a lot of places. To their credit, Bethesda recognized that a lot of people were all in for the base building shit, so a lot of the DLC feeds into it in some way or another, especially with the Vault DLC. Once it's populated, Vault 88 feels like home in such a great way.

If you've got a few friends you can start a server with or know of a server with a small community it's great for the comfy factor.

If not, it just feels empty and pointless. Like, "ok, I built this huge castle... now what? There's nobody to share it with, no need for all this extra space, shit I would have been just fine with a small cabin"

If not, Terraria is the way to go because there actually feels like there's a purpose to building large elaborate structures as you attract more merchants and require better defenses once you start hardmode and shit.

Not a lot of survival games are focused on base building, really.
>>
Not specifically survival, but some cozy base-customizing games include:

Animal Crossing
Rune Factory 4
Stardew Valley
Terraria
Starbound
Subnautica
Minecraft with good modpacks

Anyone else got a hankering for adventure games where you can come back to a cozy, cool as fuck base after your journies?

haah waaw
>>
>>384427613
That's not really a logical argument. Why cant you vote for the person you think is going to do the least amount of harm and then continue working to push whatever agenda you have? The two aren't mutually exclusive.
>>
>>384395802
I don't have an answer but holy FUCK I want a game like this. Just build a stranded little base way out in the sea.

Like Subnautica but less diving and more surface. Base entirely above water. Maybe more focus on supply and survival than tech tree climbing.

Look how fucking comfy that is. I want a game like that.
>>
>>384419452
subnautica, my dood. I've been playing for a couple of hours, and every time that I leave the safe shallow water I still get terrified. Have to make sure you have enough battery left on your flashlight, food and water so you don't dehydrate or starve, and leave as soon as the sun rises so you don't catch yourself in the deepest reaches of hell with no comfort of there being sunlight above you.
>>
>>384420403

This is my favorite type of comfy, though I'm not sure if I really like the interior design of bases. I think I'm gonna try it out regardless.

No
what kind of fucking nostalgia are you on to remember it this way

I played it from release. Terraria in space is all I ever wanted it to be but it was never, EVER fucking THAT. Not even close.
There's so much shit that's better now than it was (combat fucking sucked ass on release, space travel just got a big improvement). It's still shit and I'd never recommend it but for as much as you might argue the focus changed it sure as fuck was never Terraria in Space with good crafting and exploration. "Exploration" my fucking ass, more like "dig to the core and then land on each planet type once for ore".
>>
>>384412227
This shit's really comfy, but while Minecraft can have you doing stuff at home, Terraria has no real reason to stay in. The whole game is about exploring, digging, collecting, and fighting, and even though a cool house can be nice to come back to for like 20 seconds to drop your shit off or sell something to an NPC, its comfy is wasted because you spend like 1% of the game at home.

Because you only have 2 viable options for winning the vote, and even if they themselves are "outside" of the establishment, they will be forced to deal with the establishment majority in their own party. Had Sanders somehow won you can guarantee that he'd be having as much trouble as Trump is now pushing his own agenda. The confines of the current system guarantee that the kind of change most Americans actually want, left or right, isn't going to happen, and voting is a joke.
>>
>>384399686
Only problem with that is that the ocean is dark and it's almost impossible to light it up, and you can usually see the whole thing above water, which kind of ruins the point

Way to miss the point entirely. Whether or not you agree with the system, refusing to vote does nothing. If you do vote, you can help ensure that the one person who is going to fuck things up the least gets elected. While they are in office you can still work to change the system in whatever way you see fit with whatever powers at your disposal.

>>
>>384412532
Sucks. Who thought it was a good idea to have to take things out of your inventory to craft? For example, drinking a coconut requires dragging it onto the floor and hitting it, then you pick up the now peeled nut and drink it and are left with a shell that looks identical to the one you just drank. Cooking requires you to awkwardly hold the food over the fire. I Islands are also smol and nothing is really dangerous.
>>
>>384432618
The base building isn't the worst (it's not great either) but I hate how blueprints are portioned out.
Also it's so at odds with literally every other part of the game
Also once you build a base there's no reason to keep playing

Underwater bases are OP on Factions servers. Neither TNT nor creeper explosions can damage blocks immersed in water, so the only two methods of breaching your base (TNT cannon from outside your territory or luring a creeper) do not work.

The only things you have to remember are to use piston airlocks instead of a moon pool so if they want to ambush you it has to be out in the water, and to ensure your mine tunnels do not extend horizontally outside of your territory.

If you follow these rules, your faction will have a 100% impenetrable base which enemies cannot safely lurk outside of. If they wait on the surface their position will be obvious to everyone inside.
