2006 was the birth of the cinematic shooter, the brown and bloom color palette that every fucking AAA started to use, micro transactions, vendor specific in game items, wagglin controls and paid dlc over expansions. early 00's still had some of the 90's edge pushing marketing and development. No one era is perfect, and 00's probably are nowhere close they just seem heavenly compared to what came after.

Yeah. Its hard to put a definite year on it, and it could just be down to my age (I would have been 18 in 2006), but after that point video games and the internet really felt entirely different.

It went from being an area where I felt a belonged to complete nonsense that makes no sense to me.

Using your real name online? Actually paying real money and defending microtransactions in full retail console games? Ridiculous.

One transition that always sticks out was the Xbox 360 dashboard. It went from a more "hard" look with a colorful video game aesthetic to inoffensive experience expert certified™ garbage. That was really the dividing line I'd say.

MS dumped all that fucking money into Kinect to compete with nintendo and even did those fucking retarded avatars. Retrofitting the entire 360 platform from a person on the couch using a controller to play a game to focus on those two things was so stupid. The entire reason for the NxE was to integrate voice and motion controls for the fucking dashboard. They doubled down on kinect the next gen just to quietly pretend like it never happened so it ultimately meant nothing. Not to mention the focus on the avatars amounted to fuck all. They were used in a few xbl arcade games.

The wagglin era was fucking awful. When done right motion controls are intuitive and fun (Splatoon, No More Heroes, Mario Galaxy), but 99% of games couldn't pull them off, especially not the shovelware trash that was most of the Wii's library.
I still liked the Wii though.
