Subs are a nonissue unless you're American or German or something, other people don't even notice them there.

The voice acting of your choice is probably less about the objective quality of the voice acting (if such a thing even exists) than it is about the subjective enjoyment of the voice acting since generally speaking people play games for their own enjoyment. The spoken language also affects the atmosphere of the game for many people, so it's understandable that a weeb wants to go full weeb with Jap voices if it's possible. If the Japaneseness of the game is important to you of course you want to maximize it, kinda like with other "ethnic" types of entertainment. People watch films and listen to music from specific countries for the sole reason that they're from those countries all the time and of course they want these things to be as close to the original as possible.

1. If you have to "stare at the bottom of the screen" you're probably too close to your display. You should be able to comfortably see everything on your screen without having to shift your focus to one particular area.
2. Even if you are too close, you should only need to glance every 5-10 seconds at the subtitles. If it takes you more than a half second to read a line or two of text, you have brain problems.
3. If you regularly play games/watch anime in Japanese, you should reach a point where you can understand most of what's going on, and the subs are just a crutch.

Generally the delivery is so good that you don't need to know a word of japanese to know the gist of what's happening through emoting alone.

Not only that but with direction and guidance from the shows creators/producers and writers sometimes depending on their level of involvement. And the voice actors/actresses sometimes making meaningful adjustments and improvements to their characters and their dialogue based off what they feel is right for the character and with the guidance again of the shows staff- you just can't beat that kind of cooperation and dedication with dubs made with the bare minimum of guidance and contact with the original creators.

Once I realized this I swore off watching dubbed anime for good, the only exception being the GITS SAC dub which is one of the best ever, but a true rarity among all the shit dubs out there lacking effort and direction/dedication.

I generally only go sub if the dub is like, legitimately fucking terrible/off putting in some way.

Generally the jap voices really get by because, language barrier aside, the voice cast puts tons of emotion into it, which is generally something a bad dun cast is lacking. I guess the most recent exception to this was when i tried that shit Netflix Castlevania series. I always pick Japanese whenever possible.

The English voice acting is almost always shit. That's probably because the subjects in anime are super corny and poorly written, and hearing it spoken out loud in a language I understand just puts more emphasis on that fact. Probably has little to do with the quality of Japanese voice acting. Even if it were better, I don't think I could tell.

You know, in Europe, we're used to encountering subtitled media. And you never think of it as "having to stare" at the bottom of the screen. Now I could pretend that I find it a weird notion, but actually, it makes sense if you aren't used to it. It's a good thing, though. I learned English in part because of subtitles.
