How should realism in games be strived? Do mechanics like hunger, gun jamming and weapon breaking provide challenge?

Usually it amounts to nothing more than random annoyances and micro-management that does nothing but hamper any actual attempts at skill. Realism is over-rated, as long as the experience is believable, I'm fine with my character not eating, sleeping or having to take a shit.

Yeah. It always just becomes tedious.
Depenes how they are implemented. Far Cry 2 did gun maintenance very poorly.

this. "realistic" shit like hunger, gun jamming etc only gets in the way of fun.
realism has a place, and that place is in simulations. i don't want to have to worry about tire wear in GTA, but if it wasn't in iracing i'd feel like i got ripped off
Realism is always important, unless it gets in the way of muh diversity.

what if it serves a purpose like in rogue like games?
