I realise that I'm putting myself at a disadvantage because I'm starting the game from anywhere but the first; but will I still be able to follow what's going on?

Best example I can give is Mass Effect 2; whenever you meet someone from the first game they basically give you a brief history of who they are, what they want, and what you did with them in the second game
