The problem with this being a level transition is that it's a choice. It begs the question, what happens if you -don't- fall? Do you honestly believe you'd go to a different stage?

Going by videos from the events the robot seems a bit too hard for many people for being the first stage boss, so I think if you fall down while fighting it (at the end of the land stretch) you'd probably trigger an easier phase 2 instead.

I trust Taxman but I don't see anything too crazy coming out of this.

So the level transition, which there will be a cutscene for, has to take place, and something has to happen. Robotic comes back out the whole, grabs sonic, throws his ass up to angel island?

You also have to remember sonic can't just run right into the next level, as there is ANOTHER giant hole to the right which the boss can push you off of if you don't defeat him fast enough

I thought it was fine when I played it when it came out. I bought the HD version when it came out and couldn't believe how badly it had aged. Controlling Sonic/Shadow doesn't feel that good, it's like they weigh as much as a car and the homing jump might hurt you or might hurt the enemy, completely random. The Knuckles & Rouge sections had the worst camera I've seen in any 3D game, seriously I'm not exaggerating, it was hell. Also the levels themselves were not fun to play and the Robotnik/Tales levels were also pretty shit.

Not that Anon but I gotta agree with him, at least for the classic games. They're essentially auto-scrollers where you just go left & right to collect rings & dodge some bombs where as 1, 3K & CD gave you control to beat the special stage as fast as you can based on your skill (more-so 1 & CD than 3K, but it still holds some truth to 3K since it's all on you knowing the path, plus you get faster over time). For a Sonic game that really drags the pacing down so you rarely want to collect them.

That's a major simplification those special stages aren't just move left and right, Sonic also has a lot of weight, he can fall from the sky, and has momentum built up moving from left to right.

You do need to be fast as you have to account for the momentum and the weight as well as gravity, calling it a simple move left/right mini-game is just flat out wrong. It would be like calling Sonic 1 an artistic expression of holding right.

I don't know why this "1/3 of sa2 is good" meme persists. Even that third is a shallow, linear approximation of classic into 2D, making the same dumb errors as sa1 and more.

But it has a saving grace that sonics other "best of the modern console games" lack: the Chao garden as a unifying thread that relegated the various shallow game play styles to the role they're fit for: mini games. Treasure hunting and mech shooting dont belong in my sonic, and scripted linear shit is bad, but when they're all just different mini games for collecting animals and rings, their crappiness feels a lot more acceptable. The bar of game play depth for mini games is low. The 2p mode is also a killer way to make something fun out of these shallow game play experiences. Imagine 2p racing in a boost game!

If you're not about that Chao shit, though (and nothing about it necessitates that a fan of classic sonic game play should be about that Chao shit; I just so happen to be) then not even 1/3 of it is good.

Why would anyone have a problem with Death Egg Zone in Sonic 2 anyway? Death Egg in Sonic 3&K is more than understandable, but in Sonic 2 it's the final boss. The only ones there I can understand hate for is Metropolis, and Oil Ocean.

And your projection about my first experience with Sonic manages to be wrong on every account, it's actually impressive.

I simplified it since going into detail about them wasn't what apart of my main goal when pointing out what I disliked about it, I know there is more to it than what I stated. If we want to get detailed about this then I can mention how the special stages work.
>Sonic 1 has Sonic controlling with his normal ball-physics always while the stage around him rotates with you avoiding goal posts, things that reverse the rotation, you landing on diamond blocks to destroy them & you speeding up/slowing down the rotations
>3K having it so collect blue spheres, it having you jump at the right time over red spheres, hitting springs, bumpers and going around the outer ledges to turn the spheres into rings faster (the level design of these special stages vary as well from linear-based ones to more explorative-based ones)
>Sonic CD's UFOs having it so you jump at the right time depending on your speed, avoiding water so your time doesn't go down quickly, you hitting things that can damage you on the floor, bumpers and you gaining items from the UFOs.

Anyways, now that I've acknowledged how they all have depth to them I was just trying to get across that no matter how good you are at Sonic 2's special stages you'll always be finishing them at the exact same time unlike all the other classic special stages since you don't control where Sonic goes completely (as in you don't control him going to a goal/emerald or whatever you're collecting/destroying) & he just keeps running automatically with your focus being on going left, right & etc with what you mentioned and this can effect the pacing of the game making it drag. At the very least they drag to me, it doesn't help that with you not controlling Sonic going forward they made it so the special stages in Sonic 2 are decently long as well with them taking from 1 and a half minutes to 2 and a half minutes. Maybe if there was more variety in things to collect/avoid I'd be more into them since 3K's can be a bit long also.

But then how about the Bonus Stages? Remember how in Sonic 3 every time you hit a checkpoint, depending on your number of rings you'd get one out of 3 bonus stages? Well, that's a place they could put the blue spheres in, adding rings/items as rewards somehow. In fact, they could also add S1/2's stages there too since as I said before S3K had 3 in total.

SA1's level progression also made no fucking sense. There was never a reason or hints given to go to any of the stages besides Emerald Coast. The intertwined stories were done a lot better in SA2 instead of just being short random cameos like in SA1. The fact that 4 of the 6 characters shared some of the same boss battles were also completely dumb. Hell you fight Chaos 5 3 times. And the Chao Garden was worse than SA2, absolute fact.

Every level in Sonic 3K is at least a 7/10. You fucks are crazy.

Angel Island is a great starting level.
Hydrocity is the best water level in the entire trilogy.
Marble Garden has those fast rolling hills and shit mixed with platforming that isn't clunky.
Carnival Night is Casino Night and Chemical Plant on steroids.
Ice Cap is a great breather level, not too challenging, comfy song and unique new theme to the trilogy.
Launch Base is basically what Metropolis and Scrap Brain should've been. So much speed but actually difficult to navigate without being a clutterfuck.
Mushroom Hills spacious, wide and full of speed with gimmicks that fit the theme and are fun to use. Cept those dumb grabby things.
Flying Battery has that jamming tune and fun high speed sections despite being rather blocky in structure.
Sandopolis is... Okay that's the 6/10.
Lava Reef is like Ice Cap where it's not as challenging as the levels before and after it, but it's fun as fuck to explore.
Sky Sanctuary was in Generations for a good reason; it's the fucking climax of the story, that big chase to the Death Egg and then fucking MECHA SONIC
Death Egg is okay, but I feel like there's a bit too much platforming but not enough speed, but it has the right difficulty for a final level

Basically, every level masters the classic Sonic formula. You can't beat that.

Mech stages weren't even bad, unlike Sky Deck which was probably the worst designed level in a 3D Sonic game. And Big's stages are to be counted because they are required to be played to get the full ending, it doesn't matter how long it lasts its still there. Lets also not forget Amy's gameplay.

Some stages aren't bad for 3 acts, and it's very helpful considering you get multiple chances for Special Stages (for what it's worth). Like I don't mind that Green Hill or Spring Yard have 3 acts, even if Marble and Labyrinth drag on for too long

They should've done it like CD though where the boss act is small and gets to the point

I've replayed the game some time ago and I think that the hate for this levels is a bit unfair. Sure, they aren't as fast as others, but it's still solid platforming. I've enjoyed them more than most stages in other platformers. I'd call them a bit below the standard set by the game, but still good.
