I think the natural progression for the series would be to introduce interactive environmental storytelling to the series in the vein of Majora's Mask. You know how in Thief 1/2 you'd sometimes bump into scripted dialogues between two characters, I'd like to see whole little stories playing out dynamically while Garrett squats in the shadows, and obviously can influence the outcome by say, stealing a sword to prevent a murder from happening or some shit like that. I would also love to see variations in AI. Cautious guards, drunk guards, near-sighted or sharp-eyed guards, variations in behavior etc.

I can totally see that being done with modern tech.
That's the kind of stuff you could expect to see from Eastern European devs if they are given a big enough budget for their games.
