The series gets progressively better, but also more complicated.
The story also kind of goes all around the place it's like:

1 > 2 > 4 > depening on your homegrown onions.

And yes, they started on a pretty high/good note, so even if each new game had better gameplay than the last, the first one is anything but a piece of shit.
