Disgaea is so close to being perfect. The problem is Sohei Niikawa is the one writing every story. Every NIS game BUT Disgaea has a really standout story, and ZHP does Disgaea's brand of cheeky humor while also being really serious and touching much better than Disgaea 3 or 4 did.
Witch and the Hundred Knight, despite having eh gameplay, had a fucking amazing story, so when Disgaea D2 and D5 come along with their incest shit it's like, what the fuck. These games could be so much better.
I think the issue is the head writers are always like "Disgaea games MUST HAVE JOKES. ALWAYS. ALL THE TIME. and then you wind up with characters like Seraphina and DD2 Laharl who are just a bundle of tropes.

Makai Kingdom still had a more fun and engaging story than DD2, and the game practically almost didn't exist. Makai Kingdom was on the lesser end of the story spectrum, but games like Soul Nomad and Phantom Brave punk on any Disgaea's story except D1's and D2's Axel Mode.

Mechanically advanced - yes. So far it's best one, maybe it even has too many ways to boost your characters up.
Missing out on features - well there were features which come and gone, like Dark Sun and Felony mechanics in D2 and many other like blocks instead of geosymbols from D3 and D4. Were they good or bad that's depends honestly.
You'll also miss on some generic classes and such. Nothing too critical. If you plan to play just one best mechanically game in series - nothing wrong with starting with D5.
Content wise it's quite a bit weaker than D4 for Vita tho.

It takes quite literally 10-12h from a fresh file to kill maxed out LoC Baal in D5 if you know what you are doing. The game is broken beyond belief.

You can quite easily max out your characters without ever even stepping a foot into the item world and the chara world's singular purpose is to pass on evilities. The stat and modifier caps in D5 are all waaaay too fucking low, you can hit them so easily it hurts the game quite a lot.
In D4Vita you had to actually, you know, grind to be able to get anywhere and even after you got your maxed out Invincible Armors you still had to actually invest in characters to get them anywhere near the top

The vast customization allowed for a lot of fun shenanigans, I self inserted as a Rabbit and gave myself a yandere maid and the two of us discovered netherworld and took out the Overlords. It's great that the game allows for that kind of playstyle. I even commissioned an artist to draw the two, I'm really excited.

Because the focus of these games wasn't ever the story, it was a parody.
1 was great. It was a cluster of awful tropes common to SRPG's at the time, then it took a steaming dump on the premise.
2 Was okay. it took a pile of tropes common to Shounen anime, then took a steaming dump on this premise. Unfortunately, it forgot to really be funny while it did it, making it a dry affair.
3 started great. It took the pile of tropes common to school-settings, most notably how little school actually seems to matter in these shows, then took a steaming dump on the premise. Unfortunately, it overcorrected the mistake of 2, and just became a bit spacey and absentminded. It got lost halfway through, and then kind of diarrhead at the end.

4 had ups and downs, but 4, DD2, and 5 all forgot this, and just became the shitty stories they were trying to parody. 4 was salvaged entirely by Valvatorez, but miracles tend to not repeat.
5 Might be some next-level parody shit, but I seriously doubt it.

His base evility has him increase his damage dealt by 30% when on a higher DM than an enemy, even if it was just 1 DM. Story-wise, D4 and D1 are very close.
My favorite unit is the Great Wyrm/Ifrit/Dragon King/Whatever they rename it next. I fell in love the first time I saw Alt. Overlord. I also love Valkyrie, Bone Dragon, and Rifle Demon.
Armor Knight is fantastic though. In D5, she's the only generic worth bringing to postgame, and is in fact one of the best units for post game period.

That's what I'm saying, ZHP was such an inspiration to me when I was younger, and Soul Nomad's tweest was so good I'm still fucked up over it, W100k's plot was outstanding, and yes it had some weaker points but as a whole, it was incredibly well written.
I hate that NIS has such talented, gifted, hilarious writers and then craps out Disgaea's shitty storylines. The worst part is that Disgaea 5's plot EASILY could've been great if they just stepped back from siscon shit and tropes. If Lieze were actually evil and Void was amassing power to find a way to stop her, that would've been much better than him just being buttmad that he couldn't hog his sister's attention. Alternately, Lieze could've uses the huge amount of power she was filled with and undone all the genocide Void had caused, that way she would've DONE something as a character, because as she is, she's basically just a trophy with tits. It's so annoying.

Disgaea's super refined gameplay with a story on par with ZHP/Soul Nomad/W100k would be one of the best JRPGs of all time, no fucking question.

The height thing was my main issue with him. Those evilities all seemed super niche, so he never got his time to shine. At the least, not many other characters look as cool as he does.

But, yeah, in regards to monsters, my Orc and that one dlc Prinny with high aptitudes and most magic were my go to guys, and still my current favorites.

Beating Baal is easy. Usalia can do it on barebones stats with a skeletal Evility setup.

I imagine he rushed the sage somehow, then cleared 99.9% of maps with her.
It also helps that you can speed almost everything up a lot.

D5's grind is shit because it's shit. Even just casually going through and discovering everything yourself the postgame takes at most 15-20h after finishing the story, the only other Disgaea you can finish up that quickly is the original D1.
If you look up how to abuse the system you can do it in a matter of hours, if you know how to level it takes quite literally less than 2h after finishing the story to have your first character completely maxed out with no prior setup.

Well, to be fair I could've done this to the rabbits as well, as I mentioned it briefly in my first post, but I used aptitude increasing abilities, more specifically the Veteran Hero from the Dark Knight class, which increases HP, STR, and DEF aptitudes by 20% each, as well as the Boar Charge skill, which increased the Boar's STR by 50% while lowering HIT by 30% (not an issue so far as he almost always has 70% accuracy this way). |

The other evility that I might have equipped on him, not sure off the top of my head, is the one from the Pirate class which is similar to the Dark Knight and Sage ones, in that it increased the aptitudes of HIT and SPEED by 30%. It more or less offset my pigler friend.

I know that they likely aren't the best evilities, but for where I'm at they seem pretty good.

I'm at the first quest for the Land of Carnage, and the enemies are stupid strong. I have Asagi, Majorita, and Void Dark already.

Short term that stuff is fine, but ultimately you are going to want Attack% or Damage% evilities. Like, the Pirate's innate evility that increases damage with range, or the Lady Samurai's which makes her attack go up when attacking from the front. That kind of stuff.

Tbqh class masteries and curry speed the grind up so much it's not even funny. Curry should never have been a thing, it's way too powerful, and class masteries let you super easily and effortlessly get character growths you would have to spend a very long time for in the other games.
There's really no power curve in 5, you just finish the game and then almost immediately it spikes up to you being able to one shot everything but Carnage Item Gods and Baal

Dunno how it sold, but never heard anything good about it period.
From what I've heard - gameplay is lackluster, to point people who like the game trying to argue that it is more of visual novel than anything.
I honestly was looking to buy it, but before that I managed to get some other compile heart games for cheap and after playing those ones, I now have zero interest in whatever Compile Heart makes.
So maybe anyone else will come along and tell you about game more.
But again, I failed to see anything good about it being said, I remember threads about it around release, filled with same "ex NIS employees" rumors, and then complete disappointment when people finally played the game.

It does have a neat concept, with the sacrificing waifus to get stronger that I'm sure would have been praised if it were in a better game, but fundamentally it's shit.
The numbers it touts are meaningless since there's no real progression, and the fights are honestly more like playable cutscenes.
The characters are largely your bog-standard boardroom approved lumps of tropes designed so that at least one of them appeals to everyone, seasoned with a dash of Disgaea's "outrageous" tendencies.
