I don't know how to describe it. Kind of like a gloomy atmosphere but not so much that it is oppressive and ruins the fun. Reading the item descriptions and monster descriptions really brings RoR's world to life and makes me think of Dark Souls and STALKER.

You want games with a good atmosphere and an underlying story, Darkest Dungeon is a shaggy dog joke of a setting.

I do agree that DD isn't quite in the running when compared to STALKER, RoR, or Hollow Knight. Having played multiple thousands of hours of all the Souls games + Bloodborne, nearly 1000 across all STALKER games, a couple hundred in RoR and now nearly 100 in HK, I can easily say it's atmosphere, via world creation and sound / art design, matches the aforementioned. I did not expect this much going into the game and I honestly have felt the need to share my experience with people who enjoy good games.

It is not. The game is about a revolving sequence of useless heirs trying to pillage the blasted estate of some increasingly distant ancestor. One who started the countdown on the doomsday clock without any means to turn it off.

There's no point to the story, the gameplay gets trite and tedious after the first hour, and the lore is too anemic to stand the game up on its own. I bought the game and I regret it, I hope I can dissuade other people from doing the same.

Yeah, about some badass exploit of the ancestor and how he helped fuck over and create the denizens of the each area.

I'd agree with this, everything about your "character" in Darkest Dungeon is very removed. You just send out parties to loot shit to bring back to you so you can upgrade and buy more shit, there's nothing really visceral or personal about the gameplay. Most emotionally stimulating moments are when you get fucked over by the RNG god and watch your party die, but that's more of the irritation of all your time being retroactively wasted by a party death more than any emotional attachment to the characters.

I feel you aren't a fan of turn based combat, which I can understand. It also doesn't act as a vessel for atmosphere well for a lot of people. I mildly regret bringing it up originally, because I really do mean it when I say that Hollow Knight can match STALKER and Souls for atmosphere.
