>gets spoiled by showing Tokyo in trailers before release

What did Atlus mean by this?

how much longer is the game? i'm not ready for it to end or anything but i'm curious.
>>
>>384311719
If they didn't show Tokyo, they would lose all of their previous fans. The twist works for new fans that didn't look at the trailers and old fans stick around because they see Tokyo.

This. Mainline SMT games are literally defined by their Tokyo. A SMT game without Tokyo doesn't even qualify as a mainline game.
>>
>>384311840
Sounds really fucking lame, imagine if Mario had the same levels in every game
>>
>>384311719
You know, that's just what I thought when I first started it. I also bought the limited edition and it came with a half strategy guide.
Shit was ruined as soon as you open it and see the art of Flynn in camo gear, or see Tayama or that chick from the Ring of Gaea. Clearly not wearing outfits from Mikado.

TLDR;
Atlus ruined what could've been an awesome plot twist by showing trailers/gameplay, having a city street/lights on the box art, and having spoilers IN THE FUCKING GUIDE IT CAME WITH FOR FREE.

Fuck man. Could've been great..
Still one of my favorite games, though. I listen to the OST all the time.

They're both good and both do very different things. The only reason there's an SMT vs. Persona is because Persona's more popular and people who like one and not the other either are pissed that Persona is more popular or they gloat about it.

Strange Journey wasn't SMT4 because it wasn't set in Tokyo.

Same but I beat the game. It's a great plot twist, although I was certain there was going to be a city "eventually" since Walter shows up in one in a dream at the very beginning I just thought it'd be an end game area. Naraku fucking sucks, the battle music is good but the beginning of the game is such a fucking slog and I thought Naraku was just going to be a hundred floor dungeon so I was not impressed with the game at all.

Oh shit, good timing. I haven't played IV and plan to order it tonight. I have a few questions if anyone can answer them.

1. How hard is this game compared to the other SMT games? I want a good challenge so should I just go for the highest difficulty or will it just be me getting slaughtered every encounter?
2. I like to do neutral on a first playthrough as it typically allows you to see the most content but I have heard getting neutral in IV is a bitch, is that true and should I use a guide then for choices?
3. Last one, for story how does IV and IV:A connect? Is it a direct sequel?

Thanks.

To be fair, SMT IV was the first SMT game for some people. Given that the game itself treats the reveal of Tokyo as a twist, I can see why those people were upset about having that spoiled in advance.

>>
>>384315856
I see what you are saying, but honestly they both are
>>
>>384315774
>how hard is it
Before Medusa: hardest game in the series
After Medusa: easiest game in the series
>neutral is a bitch in IV
If i remember correctly it makes the game about 15 hours longer or something like that, I've never done that route though.
>story of IV and IV:A
Definitely play IV first, they are connected.
>>
>>384315774
>how hard
Difficulty is okay in Naraku, and you have two hard bosses in the form of Minotaur and Medusa.
The difficulty takes a nosedive after that, though.

>neutral
The game uses a law-chaos scale, where every decision you make either gives you + or - points, Neutral requires you to be in the middle of the scale when the alignment lock happens.
If you want Neutral, you probably need a guide, though I recommend saving it for an NG+, if you care about doing multiple playthroughs.

>IV:A
It takes place in an alternate timeline, branching off from IV after Flynn goes Neutral in the alignment lock, but before he manages to get to the ending.
>>
>>384311840
It was a numbered SMT.

Fans would have fucking known it was gonna take place in Tokyo eventually.
>>
>>384315774

The beginning of IV is a tad bit bullshit because of how few demons you have and your retarded-ass partners. After that it gets pretty easy, if you're familiar with SMT I'd go with hard mode...though come to think of it I can't recall if that's immediately available in IV.

The neutral "route" is basically being wishy-washy on your chaotic and lawful choices. Try to keep a balance and remember that most side missions = lawfag points.

IV:A is a direct sequel to IV's neutral route. Structurally it is a much better narrative, though your party members are way more overbearing and/or retarded. Luckily you can just kill them all later.
>>
>>384315774
>Is it a direct sequel?
It is an alternate version of the neutral ending it starts right in the middle of the neutral route.
>>
>>384312575

I played Persona 4 back in 2009 because I heard /v/ talk about it then I tried Nocturne and fell in love with SMT. I think after I beat Persona 5 I'll try SMT 1&2 on SNES.
>>

>IV:A is a direct sequel to IV's neutral route
No it's not.
>>
>>384316005
Okay, so it's nothing insane if you're experienced? I know it sounds weird but I remember years ago on my first run of nocturne I originally went normal since I heard the series was hard and later regret not going hard.
>>384316079
Thanks. Is it really the easiest? I don't care as long as it's fun but that's a little disappointing. Still looking forward to playing it.
>>384316305
>>384316310
So it's like a alternate universe from IV then?

Thanks guys.
>>
>>384315774
1. The first two hours of IV are some of the hardest megaten you'll ever play. No shame in starting with prentice difficulty. The game gets easier after that and you'll probably want to change the difficulty settings as you play.
2. Use a guide for neutral, the game keeps track of your law/chaos points but doesn't tell you what they are.
3. IV:A follows the neutral route of IV but with a new main character. You definitely benefit from having playing IV first.
>>
>>384316423
It's nothing insane but as other Anons have said, certain early game bosses can and will push in your shit because allies will continuously use spells that bosses are immune to, giving them extra press turns.

Kazuyuki Yamai being the director or at least scenario writer

Atlus benched his ass after making Raidou 1&2 not successful

look this is from the same wikipedia article:
The development team, which was dubbed Team Maniacs,[17] included both staff who had worked on previous Shin Megami Tensei titles and newer staff who had not. There were differences in thinking between the two, which led to conflicts. As an example of this, game director Kazuyuki Yamai said that some of the staff would be used to contemporary games featuring "sweet" female characters who "say nice things", and as a result would want to add that "sweetness" to Shin Megami Tensei IV; meanwhile, Yamai saw the series as having "bitter" content, and thought that it would not be possible to add "sweetness" to it. Additionally, the staff members had differing images of the meaning of Shin Megami Tensei; Yamai thought that the good points of each staff member's interpretation should go into the aspects of the game they were in charge of, while not deviating from the "bitterness".

So are all of the newer staff members at Atlus retarded or something? Usually it's the older staff members that stifle the creativity of the younger staff, but it looks here like the new staff have no idea what SMT is about. Did they join the company because of Persona or something?

It was probably some younger weebish guys who thought SMT was your generic anime shit. I am a bit worried for the future titles. I really enjoy SMT:4 and I'd say it's my real first introduction into an SMT game, considering it's the most time I've put into one and most likely going to be the first one I finish.
But I have to say, traversing Japan is just not fucking fun at all.
It feels like such a slog and I can hardly even tell where I need to go half the time.
At this point I just use a walkthrough just to guide me to each area to progress the game. I enjoy the third person areas, I enjoy the dungeons, the story, the combat, but I really can't bare with the world map sometimes, it feels like a maze sometimes.
I'm not the only one who feels this right or am I just not "getting it" ?

The main problem was the huge international success of Persona 3 (2006). Compared to P3, Strange Journey (2010) and Devil Summoner 2 - Raidou (2008) could not achieve this kind of an audience. The production clearly went for a slight change in the staff there.

Although like everything in the game the penalty for not listening to dagda isn't even bad compared to the penalty for not listening to your friends.
Also there is probably a decent amount of leeway since I apparently chose options in favor of friendship usually, and still sided with dagda with no penalties.

If you picked options more in line with dagda, but side with your friends he gets rid of your demons.
If you do the opposite navarre throws all your items on the ground and I guess you don't pick them up since you are a lazy motherfucker.

>>384320297

The penalty if you side with Dagda is that you lose all your items. If you go against Dagda, he will delete all your demons, but you can get them back through the Compendium. This is only if the alignments conflict by the way.

Probably wanted a "consequence" for your actions, but realized people would get pissed if they got screwed out of a route again like in IV. The consequence for telling dagda to go fuck himself isn't really that bad considering most demons up to that point aren't that expensive to resummon, and most of the ones you had probably just exist to be fused anyways.
Also like I said, the game seems to give you a decent amount of leeway since I almost never picked an option that gave me points towards dagda(Since they always fuck you over for no god damn reason.) so you'll probably be fine.

They're a better idea, but they're executed worse. It basically becomes Law (Reason endings), Neutral (Freedom/Demon), and Chaos (True Demon) in the end, though.
>>
>>384322124
Nocturne's story is about on par with the other mainline games. You're given pretty small snippets of lore as reasoning for delving into a particular dungeon for a magguffin. It's the atmosphere that really does it for me.

And the reasons are great, though obviously True Demon Ending is both canon and the best ending. It's more interesting to me as a concept that SMT could adopt, but in Nocturne they really do just line up pretty well with Law Neutral or Chaos

He becomes a party member and is one of the best ones, but he isn't mentioned after you beat him and have him join you. He does push forward the first act of the game though.

In the remaster/remake in Japan they replace Dante with Raidou Kuzunoha XIV and give him a big ol' buff.

Did you guys kill Yuriko or Tayama on your first playthrough of IV? I personally chose to kill Yuriko since the Ring of Gaea couldn't possibly protect the citizens of Tokyo unlike the Ashura-Kai. I know people sometimes shit on IV's story but honestly I think anyone that didn't love the cast is just crazy. I was even a bit sad you can't save Walter or Johnathan honestly but were the respective law and chaos heroes.

Yeah, the whole appeal of IV's setting was that the player and the main characters experienced it completely differently. I know they couldn't really have done the same thing in the sequel, but it lost that important part of the draw regardless.

I want to finish the neutral path (that I got through honest choices) but navigating Tokyo for side quests is impossible. Agreed. The whole scene where the cast first sees Tokyo from the sky tower after medusa still gives me chills. I knew it was coming, but leading hearing about Isabeau reading stories set in Paris, finding the gun in an abandoned room, and the metal walkways leading down the sky tower were all huge "what the fuck is going on here.." moments for me.
I remember being hooked when those first happened.

IV:A was sorta just "Oh hey, Flynn got captured so let's go on a WACKY ADVENTURE GUYS OH BOY."
The cast already knew the setting they were in, so the only surprises came from characters being assholes. Even Gaston, the one character from Mikado, /barely/ gave a fuck about being in a new land.

Actually it's a very meta way of playing with the fans of the series. Basically you got both extremes of what fans have ways wanted for an ending in SMT. A happy ending where demons and humans coexist and everything is gay and pretty, and the edgy TDE "Kill all your friends" ending. Both are, however, extremely corny and are not nuanced. Yet, there exist no middle path and the player has to make a singular choice.
>>
>>384325475
Your deduction is spot on. Soulsborne style mystery always felt retarded for me if your character could reasonably ask some dude or two for information. It's even worse if something important or intresting is only mentioned by a random npc in an obscure place or worse, a place you must backtrack to. The way Morrowind handles infodumps is way better.

>>
>>384330158
Dude, the original SMT had an actual narrative structure and progression with the plot that was shocking as fuck and defied conventions of the time. It went full modern settings, with an apocalyptic scenario slowly breaking out and all of a sudden a nuclear demon-infested apocalypse and over a decade long timeskip thrown in as a result of the US Ambassador (who turns out to be fucking Thor) getting the US to nuke Japan for summoning demons.

SMT4 is put in an amazing setting where you discover an entire game's worth of backstory that led to the world you're going through and influencing.

SJ was go from Section A to Section B to Section C to Section D to Section E to Section F to Section G to Section H.

I suppose it could be written off as IV's bar theme being more lively and vibrant because it's a different atmosphere for the cast, and IV:A's is laid back because Nanashi is used to hunter bars because he grew up as a cadet.
Still sucks.
>>
>>384329308
Dude, magic in IV:A is still better than phys unless you grinded the fuck out of incense DLC and get to levels that trivialize the game no matter what your build is.

Magic means you don't have to pump luck or agility to get extra turns, which means you'll have a larger magic stat to offset the lower base damages. That's on top of more consistently dealing weakness damages, which is a huge increase in damage on top of extra press turns and smirks.

Nanashi's hair looks passable in the poster art but not many other places because his scowl ruins it. He looks like some edgy alt kid cunt. Or a tween metal head. Ffs. I unironically like the "faggy designs" like your pic though. I'm a sucker for long hair desu

Etrian Odyssey. I love EO, and I saw a trivia thing where it said that the female gunner's pin was Jack Frost from SMT. Much later on, I saw the AVGN for the VB and saw Jack Bros and recognized Jack Frost.
I then decided to try out Persona Q as my friend told me it's EO in a costume. Enjoyed it and then bought Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker from a TRU on a whim since it had the full first run box.

Personally I just download already decrypted .3DS files from 3DSISO, specifically from the thread that mentions 1fichier or some shit like that. Sadly, I don't have enough power to brute force the emulator to 100% speed for the game since I'm using an i5-4460. Hopefully some of the major optimizations come soon. I wouldn't even be mad if they went to patreon to make progress considering how well Cemu and RPCS3 came out from it.

>reproduction cartridge
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Just kidding, I want to MAKE an english repro of SMT 1 but not only did I want the English patch, but I also wanted the automap enhancement patch (basically press the shoulder buttons to bring up automap like in SMT II). I wouldn't even know where to begin on knowing how to make a repro cart though.
>>
>>384341604
I'm almost positive carts with sd-slots exist, you could just take one that looks like the real case and print a sticker to put over the top, ask /vr/
>>
>>384311719
You didn't know the context bud. Could've been a simulation or dream, considering the opening
>>
>>384341757
I don't want to do that, considering that's a huge waste of a multi gigabyte slot for one game (and it wouldn't support expansion chip games like Star Fox, Mario RPG, etc if I wanted to do multi-game). I actually wanted to learn how to make a repro cart using flash chips and programmers and what not but I know it's kind of costly and very time consuming but I want that specific satisfaction.
>>
If you're going to play 4, should it be SMT4 or SMT4:A?
>>
>>384341929
They're literally not the same game. You have to play both separately.
>>
is physical viable in this game? or gun? what's the best build that's not magic, I guess
>>
>>384341983
I'll probably only play one. I've been trying to find my footing in the SMT series and I've just never got one to click for me but I like the idea of it on paper.

I had to stop Persona 5 at the 30 hour mark because I was bored out of my mind. I'm not sure how people enjoy that type of storytelling that treats you like a retard.
