Let me tell you something, you need at least 8 years of intense academic scholarship to truly appreciate all the nuances of a different language than your mother tongue. Forget the vocabulary and grammar, those are the easy part. Once you've mastered them you need to understand the history, the culture, understand life as if you were born and raised in that country. There are a plethora of sayings, references, phenomena, alegories, and much more you need to take into account, if you don't master all of this your efforts are all for naught because you will never ever understand truly what the art is trying to convey to you and it's message, a failure of communication is equal no matter the margin of error, even if you understand 99% of a written paragraph it's words is still lost on you.

In all seriousness its a good game. Small town feelings with great ambiance and atmosphere with a compelling mystery to solve. Something all those games share. At least as far as atmosphere and general aesthetic goes. Plot not so much, DP sucked. Shenmue was mediocre. Twin Peaks was fucking boring and slow.

Will it help you understand and appreciate the more obscure references, nuances, or nomenclatures for things you might not get otherwise? Of course. Is it necessary to be incredibly well read and have a deep understanding of the culture in order to read their literature, listen to their music, or consume any of their media? Usually not.
