Why? The in-house programs they use to generate cast light and shadows is far beyond what would be created in real time, currently.
There's also Zootopia where no current game really emulates that level of fur manipulation.

I don't even care if a character has more polygons than usual or has more realistic this and that, if it doesn't deliver proper facial reactions, you're not using yourcharacter model to its utmost potential. It fucking freaks me out to see a character have this cold stare that doesn't fit the situation at all.

Lighting. In Toy Story took hours and hours to render each frame, most of that is down to the lighting being simulated. It still isn't doable in real time today, not even close, so even the oldest CGI movie is going to look a lot better lighting wise than even the best video game for a long time.

The only thing you've got right here is lighting and polygon count, the latter which doesn't even really matter that much because modern vidya models still look better anyway. Animation is far better today than it was back then, and the textures are very clearly more detailed in the movie vs KH3 examples.

That'd be like saying building a rude goldberg machine that ends up cracking a single egg is better then just throwing a full carton of eggs across the room and breaking all of them.

I doubt this, as somebody who uses 3d software. There's no real reason for the models in the original toy story to have that many triangles/polygons, given the art style, and plenty of modern games actually have pretty high resolution models in terms of geometry.

If you count the high detail models used to make normal maps from then modern games have higher polycounts by a huge margin.

You're wrong on pretty much everything.

Yes, it's possible to have higher rendering power in a pre-rendered movie in 1995 than you still can in 2017. But that has hardly any bearing on how good something in real-time can look today vs a 1995 pre-rendered movie.
The biggest point you're missing in all of this is the knowledge of rendering and lighting gained in that 20+ year period.
We understand rendering, both in the technical sense and the correct material values in PBR, and much more about lighting, than we did back in 1995. PBR wasn't even a theory back then.

In addition to that, just the general artistic skill level has risen vastly in that timeframe because the CG and video game industry has gotten so much more lucrative.
All of this combines to let us achieve incredibly solid visuals in real time that challenge many pre-rendered visuals from even more recent movies than Toy Story.
A combination of knowledge and artistic skill both contributed so much to the visuals we're able to achieve in real time.
Real time rendering is all approximations yes, but we don't need it to be perfect, a certain level of approximation is sometimes enough for that illusion.

I hate when people like you who don't have any sort of artistic eye to see the clear visual improvement from Toy Story to KH3, and just hide behind your misguided and barely even surface level understanding of pre-rendered and real time rendering and talk as if you know it all.

Subsurface Scattering isn't inherently a skin only thing.
Plastic can get it's effects too depending on the plastic and it's thickness, but to a lesser extent of course.
Just take a look at some painted anime figurines in bright lighting and you'll see the same effects. It's not particularly strong SSS in the KH3 shots anyway.

Well, I think the first movie holds up pretty well, in the sense that you can watch it without thinking how shit the graphics are. If you put kids in front of it they probably wouldn't even notice. It's still a good movie even if it is a bit dated. I mean shit, it came out 22--holy FUCK TWENTY TWO YEARS AGO?!

...Sorry, had an existential crisis mid sentence. It holds up, in my opinion, better than, say, Halloween Spooktacular which while a great movie, sucked graphics wise even when it came out in 2003. Pic related.

I heard the reason why they went with Dan instead of Robin while he was still alive for KH1 and 2 was because Robin's recording sessions get a little too wild.

Tom Hanks' availability might not be as open as Tim Allen's but since Pixar does approve of what they have in store, we may see them pull some strings to get the living cast involved bar Andy whose outgrown the part the scenario takes place.
