When I was a kid, everyone played videogames. Even most of the girls played Final Fantasy and some CS on LAN parties, oh and MMOs and shit. I was still stereotyped, not because I was playing videogames, but because I was fat and ugly and I hung out with the other rejects.

Up to a certain age people seemed to "grow out" of video gaems when I was a kid. When we were all 7-8 years old everyone, boys and girls, loved video games, especially pokemon or Yugioh. As soon as kids reached the age where doing anything "kiddy" was grounds for ridicule, you pretty much had to hide your colourful video games. Only "mature games for mature gamers such as myself" were accepted.

I didn't do this and as a result was made fun of all the way through middle school. Some of the people I played stuff like Pokemon with made me promise not to tell anyone, they were more scared of being discovered playing pokemon than being caught fapping.

You are correct OP. The reason it gets said is because people who are socially inept can still sit alone in their room and play video games. But they aren't capable of blaming themselves for their solitude so they blame whatever it is they do as the reason why they are alone. And for many people who spend hours alone they blame video games for facilitating their situation. And by persevering against their fabricated stigma they convince themselves they are brave. Which at this point they need the self confidence so why even rain on their parade?

I can't say I ever related to this at all. I got into games because the concept is inherently cool in so many ways. You have virtual worlds, technical skill requirements and "physical" activity, characters and creatures, unique style of music and storytelling.
It's just really stimulating in ways no other media ever was.
