The FFXIV one kinda does, Eorzea is freakish because it is on a Leyline Nexus which resulted in it becoming the seat of power for the Allagan Empire, the other land masses on the continent make more sense as seen when you get to Othard, Thavnaria (And seemingly Kugane) are left alone despite being geologically ripe for invasion because it enabled proxy-trade between the Empire and Eorzea (Which is explicitly the most prosperous and resource filled), Sharlayan has Eorzea as a buffer state and seem to think that as long as they just keep to their books the empire won't do anything against them and they already gave up on settling Dravania because it painted a target at them, Mercydia if full on Aussie Deathland because it was nuked by previously mentioned Allagan Empire and accordingly the people there seem to be openly hostile to the rest of the world , Doma got bumfucked because Airships = Mountain range Barrier no longer deterred invasion.

This stuff is mostly glossed over in the plot though.

I think if you play FFVII it should be pretty clear that the world is just a scaled down approximation. There are obviously far more towns and people than you can see in the game, it's just that you don't get to visit those places. Otherwise the entire world would be populated by like 200 people.

The point was Junon had Midgar at its back and fort condor was to its landward side. It was Shinra's Naval base of operations and the cannon was there to blow the fuck out of any seaborne threats whatsoever.

It makes sense in the context of the world of FF7 having been at war ~15-20 years before the events of the game, coinciding with the proliferation of mako energy = Big fucking mako cannon just because we can.
