The way the Wii U plays Wii games is a bit weird, (you literally open the original Wii menu within the Wii U) so you can have all the same homebrew/hacking apps from the Wii

You can use an SD card or external HDD, just be warned you can't use the HDD for anything else if you use it for Wii U, and you'll need an SD card to hack it.
