Actually, it's Hojo's fault. Hojo was the one that told him his mother was Jenova. He should have said Lucrecia. The only thing Ghast did wrong in relation to the whole thing was identifying Jenova as an Ancient, but it couldn't be helped seen that she can manipulate her appearance.

I've always been a Tifa guy, but playing through the game again, I can really see why people get into Aeris so much.

In all the years that passed, I've always thought that Tifa was the woman Cloud needed- he returned to her and she can see that his psyche seems to be hanging by a thread, she doesn't know how to help him but she does her best, trying to just be there for him, trying to support him and trying to go along with the false history he spins, even though she knows it's not true.

But I'd forgotten how Aeris fits into that too, that she's the one who actually challenges Cloud. At the start of the game everyone just goes along with his gruff loner personality, she teases him, ignores him and basically makes him play to her tune instead of playing to his. It's no surprise at all that she captivated him so thoroughly, because she's the one who actually gets him to break out of the persona he's given himself and be him, Cloud, someone who's not the dour and harsh ideal Zack/SOLDIER image he's been living.

It's funny seeing how minimal the Aeris/Zack relationship was though, she even straight up says there was nothing serious between them before she has any idea about what's up with Cloud and him, although, it was about 5 years ago, so I suppose that's fair enough. It's such a change from all the other media that play Aeris up as this ideal waifu and Zack's ideal love, the base game seems to present it as just something simple that didn't work out.

TL;DR: Tifa is still best girl, but Cloud should definitely take Aeris on the Golden Saucer date I think, it's no surprise he'd be in love with her.

At that point I didn't care enough. I wasn't emulating it to be cheap, I was doing so to get the "Authentic Version", or as close as possible without having a PSX and the game. Chucking $15 onto Steam and buying it wasn't a big deal.
