I always heard about how great Bulma, Krillin, Yajirobe, Yamcha, Tien, Chiaozu, and Roshi were in the pre-Z era. Then I go back and read it, only to find Yamcha actually gets embarrassed with greater frequency, Bulma is just as useless, Chiaozu was never even part of a real character dynamic with anyone, and Yajirobe only appeared towards the tail end of things. Krillin was also never much of a bad ass but his role in Z didn't even diminish until the Buu saga, he always got a pretty good deal all things considered. Technically, SS2 and 3 aren't new forms, just Super Saiyan with more ki used. Goku describes SS2 as "Ascended Super Saiyan" and 3 as "even further beyond." Before Super started, Toriyama described them, again, as alternate Super Saiyans, not new forms. He even said that Goku would not use 2 or 3 anymore because it would be more beneficial to strengthen the normal Super Saiyan form.

At the time, Gohan's Super Saiyan "2" really was (and technically is) just his version of a rage-boosted Super Saiyan. So yea.
