What makes a good dpad? I've used pretty much every main first party controller and I've never really been able to tell much of a difference from the supposed great ones and shit ones

Personally I've always thought the Playstation controllers have great d-pads because the arrows aren't joined together in a cross making accidental inputs impossible.
Basically accuracy, everyone hates the 360 d-pad because when you press right there's a small % chance it'll actually press down instead.
Otherwise it's just how they feel.
I haven't really used a DPAD for more than occasional presses (a la Dark Souls) in a long time. The last time was probably the original PS1 controller and most PS1 games weren't a good fit for the DPAD.
The SNES was the most memorable DPAD for me. Playing Mega Man X with an SNES pad is just the best.
