Funny, it really looks like dishonored. Considering it's the same guy behind the art style it makes sense ofc but I guess it means he had more freedom at Arkane Studio than at Valve.

Actually, he had just as much freedom. It was Antonov who eventually proposed the shift in tone from grey-sky super-industrial "everything is already fucked" to more bright, east-europe-inspired settings: the story goes that that shift of tone came after visited his family in his home country and ended up touring East Europe with his brother for a while. Cities like Sofia and Prague and the devastated east-european post-socialist countryside fascinated him and that eventually inspired him to propose the shift in art direction.
He further argued that it also makes more sense for the player to try and save a dying world, rather than an already dead one.

To be honest, the shift in tone seems like the very best thing that happened to the series. Shit like >>384108172 looks AWFUL. A lot of good ideas in the old HL2 beta, but it sure as fuck looked a lot worse from art-direction perspective.

As for reason to cut hydra:
I've heard it was a buggy bitch that ended up being more frustrating and fun.

Because it's one of the earliest versions of this map.
I agree that final art-style is cooler because it's different. It's not edgy with it's dark weather and clouds. But I disagree in calling old art-stile awful. It's just as amazing and I wish we could have both of them in two different theoretical games. One realistic and one dreamlike.

It's playable but you have to jump though some fucking hoops to get it to run. You have to keep in mind you need to run it on the 14 year old source engine

A lot of the unfinished code did get released, but not exactly in a playable form. People had taken the bits and pieces of code that was leaked and kinda stitched it together into playable segments. Most of it isn't complete, or fun - some of it is just half-finished levels. Other contains some degree of actual playable segments with bits of scripted evens even left in. It's by no means actually resembling a game though.

Dude, in 2003 a hacker stole shit ton of files, and a working half life 2 engine build, decompiled source files included. Problem is that the engine was from 2003 but the most interesting shit was from 2000-2002 (when the old storyline was being developed) so it's all incompatible. That's why we have a relatively big community that fixes shit.

Picrelated is how one of the early levels looks if you compile it as-is.

Now look at the 7th minute of this video for what autism and time can do. This is the exact same map and engine build.

Valve concluded that it looked really cool when you watched it fight other enemies but was crap when it was attacking the player. They tried a few variations of it to get it to be interesting but decided to just scrap it. They explain all of this in the developers commentary.

Thanks, this stuff is really interesting. I've been in Half Life 2 beta threads before but people have only ever posted screenshots and concept art. I had no idea video's and playable hacked together builds existed. This is really neat. It's a shame Valve just scrapped all of this and didn't even attempt to reuse the assets at least.

They do reuse it. Wasteland was reused in EP2 (and cut again, lol) picrelated is a leaked ep2 map. Borealis was reused. Antarctica and it's base was reused. That concept of a deep chasm and trains passing on bridges through it was in EP1 where dog throws you into the citadel. Caves were reused in EP2 (they were originally to be featured under ravenholm as a chapter. That's why it seems strange that you entered at night and exited when it's already daylight a short time after. Grubs in ep2 were in hl2 beta, etc. Valve said that concepts never really die, just wait their turn.

That's the case with a lot of combine buildings. Prison, nexus... Both just empty buildings with absolutely nothing of value. Nova prospekt has one room where they torture a vortigaunt and the whole CP NEXUS has two ball generators and a strange tripwire room. Seems like they didn't have the time to furnish those properly.

In general there is a severe lack of world building exposure. Like those canal bases you fight in. One is an APC garage, that's cool, but every other is just some old industrial building with nothing of value. I wish there were citizen workers who would run and hide from the fighting.
