You don't need a HUD. I game on a plasma TV and I turn it completely off for every game I play, or I don't play it. A good game gives you all the indicators you need just by looking at what the enemies are doing / what your character is doing / what your character is holding.

The only things you really need are disappearing HUD icons for selecting weapons and showing ammo count etc. Health should be either a visual effect that gets more dramatic as you get more hurt, or it should be a bar that appears when you are hurt; games should give you the option on that one.

I even play Bloodborne without a HUD; the only times I need it are when I am switching between items with square. You just get a nautral feel for things like your health and your stamina
