Are you ready for the REAL Star Citizen?

>On the Kickstarter page, the team behind the game promises a long list of potential activities: "Develop planets, colonize worlds, nurture species, mine elements, build robots, and discover unique life-forms as you coordinate with others in an intense game of real-time strategy."
>Players would supposedly begin by exploring Proxima B, the closest known exoplanet to our own solar system, just over 4 light years away (there are real-life plans to try to send mini-spacecraft there).
>After exploring the surface of that planet and learning how the science-based physics systems work (with Tyson as your guide), players would be ready to start the main event.
>Beginning at a space station, they'd create and terraform a home planet and system, taking into account real aspects of biology and chemistry.
>That system can include be colonies and outposts — and you can play solo or with friends.
>Players would also need to protect their systems from threats, including environmental disaster, space objects, climate change, disease, and the changes brought about by evolution and whatever else may happen to a planet.
>Players would also be able to design a spacecraft to explore galaxies created by friends or "prominent scientists and fictional world-builders like Tyson, Bill Nye, George R.R. Martin, Neil Gaiman, and Peter Beagle," according to the Kickstarter.

Tyson is not even a legitimate scientist. He is a popsci scientist. There is a difference. He's up there with Bill Nye, but Bill Nye is only slightly better. I liked Bill a lot more before the massive shitshow that is his new show, jesus christ what a nightmare that thing is.

it's not just a dichotomy of old and new scientists, but that people in general seem dumber than they did before. but we know that objectively, people aren't dumber, if going by something like a literacy rate.

at the same time, while people are generally smarter, both the average person and the legitimately intelligent still seem fucking stupid. as if there's just a loss of elegance and beauty in how we speak and think.

Never said I didn't care about him. I'm sure he's made some other contributions that I just don't particularly care about. That doesn't mean I don't care about him, as a human being, or what the impact of those contributions can do for the scientific community and the rest of humanity.

I'm just saying that, so far, I've not really heard of him doing anything really THAT important. He mostly just goes on morning news shows and talks about stuff like global warming, which at this stage you're an idiot if you don't think it's a real thing. All I've ever heard from him are just reiterations of what those before him have been discussing.

Sure it's true that it happens and that there is meddling in some cases. But also we need to make sure to go against those that clearly do have an agenda for the right or the left. We need people who research for data and post things that can be proven true regardless of idealogy. That is why I said they need to follow the data where it needs to.

Jesus Christ all these insecure kiddies who barely made it through highschool being mad about science popularization, mostly because hurr durr he's black!

Jesus fucking Christ.

That said, projects like these usually don't end very well, simply because precedence of realism over gameplay functionality USUALLY does not end well. The only science-popularization game that worked really well that I can think of was Buzz Aldrin's Space Race, and even that had an extremely niche appeal.

>>384111518
>Yes, I am implying that your ability to create wealth is directly related to your intelligence.
That is not something that needs to be implied, it's a cold hard scientific fact. There is a positive correlation between IQ and wealth or accademic and social success that can't be denied.

That said, it's not true that higher IQ also correlates with right-wing orientation. Or intelligence in general (because IQ is actually only one of existing intelligence marker).

It's actually much better to look at personality traits than intelligence. According to big five:

Conscientiousness is directly correlated to success in business, and also happens to be correlated to conservativism.

Openness is related to artistic talent and most common marker for left-wing inclination. It is however, also directly correlated to IQ and intelligence in general.

Other factors that play role are agreeableness (correlated again to left-wing attitudes) and neuroticism (correlated mainly to conservativism).

>at the same time, while people are generally smarter, both the average person and the legitimately intelligent still seem fucking stupid.
First of all, intelligence is a very complex concept that consists of multiple factors and is honestly mostly poorly defined by most people.
Second of all: people aren't getting smarter: they either stay the same, or possibly are growing slightly dumber than they had been in past. There is evidence indicating that people pre-agrarian revolution were actually smarter than they are now, technical parameters speaking. Although that evidence is tenacious, and based on the fact that they routinely had solved problems of extreme complexity with much less tools or pooled experience than we do today. It might be also explained by the sheer amount of time they had to solve them though.

As for people seemingly becoming dumber: first of all - GREAT deal of that is simple the fact that we are more exposed to stupidity, as more democratic society and social networking allow the dumb people to have more of a voice than ever. It's just much easier for people to manifest their beliefs than ever. We see more dumb people, AND there is also the negative attention bias: we remember the dumb opinions more than the smart ones, which makes us feel like there is a lot more dumb people than it seems. Hell, dumb people tend to be slightly more ready to share their opinions too, because "dumbness" in this case also usually includes lack of self-awareness or self-criticality.

With all that in mind, it is also true that there is a problem with education and the general way people are encouraged to use their capacity for knowledge. And neo-liberalism, postmodernism and whole bunch of other, often left-wing-connected beliefs are also at play. There is currently a major problem in the US, where basically ALL universities are profoundly left-wing: and left-wing isn't great at exercising critical thinking, for an example.

Actually, before he went completely mental, Dawkins used to be a very good evolutionary biologist. The concept of meme turned out ultimately to be a dead end due to it's very narrow and imperfect definition, but the guy did a major work in showing potential ways to reconcile behavioral and genetic development: The Blind Watchmaker and The Selfish Gene were both pretty ground-breaking books based on very good research and analysis.

I hate what Dawkins had become, but it's not true that he was never a good scientist.

Also, the inclusion of Tyson on that list is somewhat misleading: the guy has been pretty open to both philosophy and religion, he merely points out that it can go wrong, not that it's a futile or stupid idea at core.

I have absolutely nothing against this project in theory and I do find the sheer amount of pointless hostility around here pretty fucking sad:
That said I think scepticism IS in place here. The promises the game makes are too vague, and experience teaches us that these kinds of educational projects don't usually end very well. Also, it's a mistake to assume that when people want "proper space exploration game", they are asking for realism or scientific plausibility. The problem of No Man's Sky was not the lack of those: it was a poor design issue that made it un-fun to play.

>if god doesn't exist so does objective morality which leads to moral relativism and its a slippery slope from there
Morality by definition isn't objective, not even under strictly religious codes. Morality by definition is normative. And most societies were well aware of that - most religions do not have actually one unified moral code to begin with, while many societies did have a unified moral code imposed by a system that was not actually theist to begin with (example of former would be Hindu or Shinto, while example of latter would be Confucianism).
So the assumption that we need religion to establish objective morality is wrong on just about every level. And I say that as somebody who is generally a religious apologist.

Why do science negroes think devs don't know how to make "accurate" things? Accurate just isn't fun. Accurate sucks.
>>
>>384116585
accurate is fun, it's just that fun isn't necessary for a game to be successful

The real-sized model has never been actually tested on sand precisely because people realize that it's a bad idea: not only that it would not work, but the sand would very quickly get into the propulsion system and jam it up, making it a pretty costly experiment with forgone conclusion.
So why do people make up shit like this again? It takes ten seconds of googling to actually disprove this claim...

>>384116585
Because some people do find accuracy interesting and valuable, and like to actually learn about the world or our currently existing knowledge of it, even might find it fun?

Why do retards go around screaming racial epithets out of frustration of being faced with reality where people might view things differently?
>>
>accurate space game
There's literally no worse place to bring accuracy to than space. It's fucking unimaginably large stretches of absolute nothing. In scientifically accurate Elite or Freelancer you'd spend years to fly to the nearest planet and found completely nothing on it.
>>
>>384116585
Accurate things can be fun, but the target audience is just much smaller.
Look at flight sims. They can get really accurate, but it just isn't what most people are looking for in video games.
>>
>>384116673
>Why do retards go around screaming racial epithets out of frustration of being faced with reality where people might view things differently?
For the same reason you're using ableist slurs when faced with different views.
>>
>>384116784
You people DO realize that there are ways to actually get around this? Like that time does not have to be represented 1:1? Or that some important concepts might be accurate while others do take liberties? You do realize that when people talk about accuracy in subjects such as these, they mean "generally accurate" or "representing the most important scientific ideas", not a perfect, absolute, 100% accuracy?

Seriously, are you people brain-damaged?
>>
>>384104619
if he wasn´t black he wouldn´t be popular that is just a fact

Okay.
>>
>>384116938
>100% realistic
>nothing in space ever

You can't have realism and a space economy. What do the people living in space produce that they can sell to other people at a sufficient profit to support their life style?
>>
>>384117017
>>384117107
Again: are you people braindamaged? Do you actually have any other contact with reality other than this place? This is not actually a trivial matter: this degree of utter cluelessness about reality is actually seriously worrisome.

Shut your trap, cunt. You vapid fantasies about asteroid mining are just that, fantasies. You're so fucking retarded you don't know star trek from real life because you've never lived it, never read any books you didn't have to, and probably voted for clinton.

Fuck off or name the economic activity, you reprehensible ass.
>>
>>384117414
Shut up, you clown.
>>
>>384117503
Dude, you don't understand basic language and most basic human fucking communication and you talk about "never living real life"? Really? Also, I can assure you that I've read more on this subject than you did.
And no, you are actually wrong on that too: local resupplying is actually considered a necessity for any type of longer-distance space exploration. Plans for resupplying hydrogen in particular are actually discussed (Demetriades proposed space-depot resupplying from atmospheric gasses all the way back in 1964).
NASA's proposition for asteroid mining can be read about here:
https://www.nasa.gov/offices/oct/early_stage_innovation/niac/2012_phase_I_fellows_cohen.html
NSS's published proposition by Durda here:
http://www.nss.org/adastra/volume18/durda.htmSagan and Ostro discussed the viability of off-surface mining on many opportunities, noting that while certainly feasible, it poses some considerable risks. You can read more around here:
https://trs.jpl.nasa.gov/bitstream/handle/2014/19498/98-0908.pdf
I could carry on providing more evidence that you are full of shit, but it's really rather pointless.

More importantly, the idea is not to be 100% accurate to begin with. Basic inference of intention and meaning: something you'd learn if you actually read or talked to real people, instead of literally screaming something incomprehensible about voting for Clinton. A fun fact: REAL world actually also has countries that aren't US, and people who disagree with you but AREN'T on the opposite political spectrum.

It's called spoken language and basic principles of communication. Learn how it works.

That is how you deal with being provided overwhelming unquestionable evidence that you are completely wrong? Sure.
