that being said, this rule really only applies to movies and shows for me. i don't give a fuck about video games. generally speaking, if a game has bad voice acting, it's charming. if it has good voice acting, it's icing on the cake. movies and shows don't have gameplay to make up for it, though you could make a case for action scenes or whatever.

Japan doesn't have a dogshit dubbing industry, though. That's the actual issue here, crappy localisation companies that buy the rights for as much money as possible, and then cut costs by hiring hobos for the voice work and interns to do the translations.

Japan has some shitty E>J work going on too, but it's just the translation side of things, their dubs are pretty reasonable. Note that games made in America usually don't have any poor voice work, because they're made by people who care on some level, instead of parasitic localisation companies trying to eke out a profit.

The funniest thing is now that I understand Japanese sometimes I hate the Japanese dub. I usually switch between English and Japanese before I decide.

For FFXIV I couldn't stand Prompto's Japanese VA so I switched to English.

For BOTW Zelda's voice actor was horrible so I had to play in Japanese once they made the option available.
