Let me guess, you started learning Japanese a few months ago and you think you're making so much progress because you recognize a word or two in JRPGs. You think you have another couple of years before you're completely fluent. You're wrong, and you'll eventually give up when you get a job and you're faced with the prospect of spending all your free time learning a language just so you can play video games that you're rapidly losing interest in.

Japanese is a somewhat difficult and time-consuming language to learn, and its application outside of video games and anime is rather limited if you weren't born in Japan.

You could learn Latin and probably get more enjoyment out of it.

It takes less than 10 minutes a day to learn a few words or characters and practice old lessons, I do it when I'm bored or finish my lunch early. If you're doing it like 5 times a week, it adds up and makes you want to practice more. Progress really starts to show when you can look back at old lessons and breeze through them.

Yeah, also 豚 means pig/boar in Japanese but it seems archaic to use it to refer to pigs in Chinese, 猪 being used instead. It's a hint showing the sentence wasn't written by a Chinese person. Interestingly 豚 appears in Chinese to refer to other animals, like dolphin 海豚 , sea pig/boar

>breeze through german

>russian is a bit harder but once I have the Cyrillic script down it's not too bad either
>can't break into japanese for the life of me

I don't fucking get it. Memorization has always been the hardest part, but with other languages speaking conversationally with people lets me more or less work backward by sounding out words based on what I know of the syllabary, but you can't do that with japanese because lmao kanji. I can't even get hiragana down pat. And it's the little kid language they use to take apart their even more obtuse kanji script.

Most of the rest of the civilized world uses an alphabet/script to construct their words. Not the fucking gooks. Well, not exactly. See they do that, twice, with two different fucking alphabets, but that's not even what they actually use to communicate. There isn't logic to it. If you just know katakana and hiragana, and you hear a word in japanese, you might as well scribble on a fucking paper, because that'll get you far closer to writing the kanji than the other two scripts will.

I honest to god think I'd be better off learning to program and becoming rich so I can hire some nip hafu to translate shit for me.

There are videos online showing how difficult it is to remember how to write Chinese characters by asking random members of the public how to write various commonly used characters. A surprising number of them can't write basic words, or it at least takes them a while to remember.

It's something strange about Chinese. If you see a character, you can instantly recall what it means, no problem. If you're prompted to write a character without any visual reference, however, it's hard as fuck. Even after years of studying, there will be plenty of characters you just can't remember how to write, despite having no problem reading them if you saw them in an article or email.

It's something about how your brain works. The visual cue allows your brain to quickly remember the meaning. But it doesn't work so well the other way round. If you know the word you want to write and then have to produce the written character on paper from memory, it's much harder.

This is the problem with these sorts of writing systems. But there are benefits. They tend to take up less physical space because they're more information dense. One small character can have the meaning of a long word. It makes a difference on things like signs, notices, advertisements, etc.
>>
>>384088271
fucking this
even the sand niggers, who don't use glorious indo-european (or use the least germanic varieties) manage to keep their scripts under control so it's not 100+ symbols spread over multiple writing systems. And correct me if I'm wrong, but the asians are literally the only race on the planet who haven't left the linguistic cancer that is the logogram in the past.

The original artist cannot censor his own work, its called a re-work.
Marketing can also adjust things in order to hit a better age rating restriction
Censorship is moving the exact same work to a new audience in the west and having things 'modified' because they can't handle it, when they haven't even been given the choice.
But americans keep buying the censored versions.

any amount of breaks and you quickly forget what youve done. i remember many of the stories but there is no lasting connection between them and their character and especially no lasting connection with the keyword

It takes an hour a day maybe one and a half if you're slow.
Just use kanji koohii, useful stories get upvoted and liked so you have something to go by.
Most of the work is done all you have to do is copy paste into anki there's even a Heisig deck for you.

eg:
>see the Kanji 姉
>paste the kanji into the search and see other's stories, 5 seconds.
>See the one you like which is likely the top one, and paste it into the story field in anki. 10 seconds.
>Let's say the story is you walk in to see your elder sister wearing a bath towel. Female, cloth.
>Memorise it. 30-60 seconds at most, chances are you'll memerise it quicker.
>Move on.

It's really not hard.
>>
>>384099047
I've never really thought about it, but it's basically just a vocalised exertion of effort.
>>
>>384101536

Learning Japanese is pretty much the best thing you can possibly do. Not only do you get the feeling of superiority over the other 99% of the site who are too dumb to do it, you also get access to so much shit, and a much deeper understanding of everything you use the language for.

Going back to shit you watched, played or read in English is like walking out of Plato's cave, no joke. Puns make sense, character names aren't meaningless gibberish, it's insane how much stuff is lost in translation. If you've read manga, and ever been confused about who was talking in which bubble, you'll never have that issue again.

And then you throw in porn, TV, all the untranslated shit out there, and my only regret is not starting sooner. I find it hard to believe that anyone here wouldn't benefit from learning nip, it's an hour or two a day that you'd just be spending shitposting here anyway.

Same. This is the intermediate plateau. You probably have the grasp of like a 5 year old, which sounds like an insult but in reality isn't bad. You can understand sentences based on context to fill in words you don't understand, but it may take you a bit and your reading level is probably super basic (except a 5 year old can't read 中出し but I can, for reasons. I still love how Japanese has a word for this very specifically.)

The idea that someone couldn't pass N5 is absolutely absurd to me. N4 is already so easy that you can pass it in a week, N5 is like 20 minutes of study before the exam.

What's the matter, Anon? You don't like learning 食わず嫌い? A word literally made to convey the meaning "Disliking something before you've even given it a taste?"

I love those little time savers, honestly. It's pretty rad. I mean, lots of other languages have cool time savers too that I wish English had. Like, Portuguese has this word "saudade" which is the word used to pinpoint that melancholic nostalgia you have for something that you were deeply attached to that is lost. Think of it as the feeling you get when remembering an old relationship, that wasn't bad or anything. It isn't a bitter feeling, nor is it happy, it's kind of yearning but at the same time not because you understand that the time has long past, and yet you still feel SOMETHING going on with those memories. It's such a hard concept to convey in English, I feel like I didn't even properly explain it myself, but you kinda know when you've pinpointed that feeling and have a word to express it.

I am learning Japanese and have remembered the 50 essential hiragana symbols, now I am going to learn the other extra stuff like yoon きゅ and dakuon が. The good thing is that I have 8 Japanese friends from my college club who help teach and/or correct me whenever I am writing or saying something wrong in Japanese. Life is pretty good desu.

While Japanese media( Anime, Manga, Video Games) is a major reason why I am learning the language, half of the reason is because I would like to speak with my friends in Japanese. I would also like to tour Japan someday during the cheap seasons.
>>
>japenese is pronounced basically the same as french if you remove all the subtleties like silent letters, making it a simple string of simple syllables the french can pronounce effortlessly once they learn a word
>french uses 26 simple-to-write letters and 3 accents which always behave the same no matter which vowel they're on meaning you can very easily determine how to write them by hearing the word; and even if you're a foreigner or a shitter butchering a word a french person will understand what you mean
>japenese is a fucking clusterfuck of 5000 characters which are a pain to write and you have to memorize to convey any kind of meaning ever plus 2 other alphabets because why the fuck not?
How fucking hard is it to fix your alphabet? Even sandniggers did it
I can learn to understand any fucking language with a proper alphabet in 2 or 3 months but gook languages I might as well be reading enochian

Hiragana is vowels and consonant-vowel combinations to form words. You can make every japanese word in hiragana. It started out as literally a more "artistic" way to compose poetry. Before that, they just aped Chinese characters. Kanji are Chinese characters which have a variety of "readings" or meanings which you just have to understand.

I keep forgetting what させる does to verbs. And is 感じ a suru verb? And くれ is a shortened くれて? So it's something like "let me feel"?
>>
>>384112417
You're just at the top of the iceberg then. Kanji is where the difficulty starts.

Kanjis are pronounced and the meaning is different based on if it's alone or next to another kanji. You will just need to learn all the meanings and how they are pronounced, there's no real shortcuts and there's 2000+ of them.

If you are actually going to do it I suggest learning them with radicals instead of strokes (you'll thank me later). Radicals are basically small kanjis that exist within the bigger and more difficult kanjis that makes remembering them a bit easier.

I just don't know if it's worth it. I find the language spoken and written beautiful and it frustrates me that there is so much stuff out there in japanese that's untranslated and hard to auto-translate but is that reason enough to put in several hours a day of effort into learning the language?

When I don't plan on living there? When I am not into anime/manga/VNs? When I am not planning on doing any in-depth japanese studies?

Most of the worthwhile media gets translated anyways. But there just is this curiosity... the desire to play some obscure japanese games, to visit the japanese internet and see what they talk about, to watch some japanese tv shows no one would bother to translate...

I'm personally learning them in a weird order because just studying by looking them in some chart is no good for me. I play games some japanese games, read manga etc and when I come across simple looking kanjis I don't understand I look it up and see what radicals are used in it, then study it and other kanjis that look the same or use the same radicals.

Site like kanjidamage may help (even if the puns are not good for remembering) the site does good job of splitting the difficult kanjis in radicals and so.

Just have go at learning the Kana. It's basically a free demo of the real language and it will give you some hands-on experience.

If you don't feel like going further after a week then call it a day and stop. Just the little effort you'll put into it will massively change the way you'll look at the language. Besides that, the utility of reading very basic Japanese words and basically every name of video game characters can come in quite handy. It's better than nothing after all.

Koreans did it during prehistory from the modern point of view.
What's more, their language has a fuck-load more sounds to it (being a tonal language like Vietnamese or Chinese). People need to realize that your comment is a fucking understatement.

EVERYTHING in Japanese media. IS SO FUCKING CLICHE. That you could literally learn 500-1000 sentences and understand EVERYTHING. I wish I was fucking joking.

Learning Japanese was a mistake. It made doujins unfappable for me due to all the recycled text. It made anime (even the seinen kind) far too bland and annoying to be able to predict the exact sentences characters are going to say before they say it.

I wish I never put years of my life into this fucking language.

That said I do have a Japanese wife now and make ~$30.000 a year as an eikaiwa English teacher in Japan. So it at least cured my NEETdom.

This is pretty silly, it doesn't matter what a particle looks like, you're going to be able to pick it out just as easily. It's like worrying about being able to recognise "and" instead of "a".

It still looks like a complete fucking mess, but I feel like it isn't that hellish to read, especially since each symbol only has one reading in Chink.

Here's what I would recommend if you're an anon who just wants to understand Japanese games and music: download Anki for PC and phone, get an account synced, and download the Core6k or Core10k deck (might have to go to DJT threads on /jp/ or /int/ to find the best version), go at 10-20 new words a day (don't get impatient and overdo it as a noob, it will bite you in the ass). Once you've learned all words in the Core deck, you start adding new ones on your own.

Learn hiragana & katakana, bookmark Tae Kim's Grammar Guide (http://www.guidetojapanese.org/learn/grammar) and read at least until Essential Grammar. You will have to check the grammar guide many times as time goes on.

Also download Japanese keyboard (Microsoft IME or whatever) so that you can type in Japanese. This will help you with dictionaries and you will also have the IME Pad where you can drawn character recognition.

The Rikaichan/Rikaikun addon is worth considering as a newbie, it highlights Japanese words on webpages and provides on-the-fly definitions.

I honestly recommend that you spend your first few hundred hours of reading on shonen manga (furigana is a great help) or hentai doujinshi. Hentai is low in difficulty and you will have plenty of motivation. Don't be discouraged if feels hard in the beginning though, I remember spending 30 minutes on single speech bubbles while fapping furiously and drawing kanji in the IME Pad the first few weeks.

People use set phrases all the time in English too, man. It's a little worse in Japanese, but there's a lot you can do with cliche.

Whatever you do, DON'T date any chick who lives even remotely near Tokyo, or even commutes there. The chicks in that city are all awful.

Only when you get out to the boonies do the chicks become worth dating.

Learn the language that you'll have the most exposure to. You can be hipster faggot and "learn" a language you'll have no exposure to so you can forget it just as fast as you pick it up. Or you can pick up a language that self-reinforces itself over your lifetime thanks to media exposure.

Most people prefer spending their time on something they enjoy and are interested in over something that's objectively the most useful, it's not some great mystery.

We're all posting on a video game board here, anyone trying to preach about how one's time should be spent is only fooling themselves.

But Japanese is the objectively most useful thing you can learn if you're the kind of person who wound up here of all places.

Unless you're still enough of a normie to think that money has any value.

HAVE FUN BEING CHEATED ON!

https://youtu.be/ENscSDOsodE

But no seriously. DON'T date a Japanese woman if you want to have a monogamous relationship. IT'S ACCEPTED in Japanese culture to cheat and women don't think it's wrong when they cheat at all. "Because it's normal".

There is a reason why NTR porn is so prevalent in Japan. So keep this in mind.

you do realize that's more than US minimum wage? and depending on which city he lives, it could be a reasonable amount for his standard of living. and if his wife also works, she could be bringing in 30k herself(or more) their combined salaries would put them at lower middle class.

My selfmotivation is a -1 out of 10, I can barely convince myself to get out of bed in the morning and eat food even if I'm starving, sometimes I can go days without eating just because it feels like too much effort to grab a granola bar much less cook. You really think someone like that has the motivation and drive to learn a language?

Don't know. Stuff for kids and teenagers generally has it. In my case I just downloaded raws for and re-read One Piece since I like that manga.

Simple nukige can also be good for learning. I remember playing games from JSK Studio. I don't recommend VN style nukige in the absolute beginning since they can have enough text that you'll spend hours bashing your head against the monitor before you get to any scenes.

He means the 50 hiragana characters. There are then more hiragana which adds what I would consider "accents" which changes a word from か(Ka) to が(Ga).

Also if you want to say some characters you would have to sort of "smoosh" them together.so Kyu is きゅwhich uses the hiragana characters き(ki) and ゆ(yu) but you don't say KiYu. You say Kyu.
>>
>>384122402

There's only 46 standard hiragana, the rest are literally the same except with the dakuten on the top right. Also if it takes you a week to learn then you're doing something wrong, hiragana should take like 3 days max even with minimal effort.

If you're an adult trying to learn Japanese, give up because it was over before you even started. I was lucky enough to go to a HS where they taught Japanese classes and took it for 3 years. I understand everything when people talk but still stutter in conversation a bit and have some trouble writing, but overall I can play games or watch Japanese TV no problem.

It is pure degenration to think that the modern eastern culture is in any way superior to the west. Even the most westernised mentalities there are still confucian influenced, which means Japs will throw away their life for the smallest thing, if they beleave it is worth something.

Japanese art and entertainment is not successful because they reached any higher level than before, no, they simply no nothing else but work until they die.

If anything japs should learn my language, not the other way around.

It really does. I got an IB degree with a minor in speaking the language. I've since moved on to the use of the degree outside of the language and my skills have atrophied. I'd be able to carry on conversation and live in Japan comfortably if I needed, but I'm sorely lacking in many grammatic forms and vocabulary. That said, I can understand more or less all anime and vidya with no problems. Just everyone speaks the same way, using the same few hundred words.
