Sora failed the test because he was not used to being tempted by Darkness. In every single game he has never been against that kind of thing until then.

Riku passed the test despite falling to darkness IN THE PAST, because he has experience with dealing with the darkness and controlling it. It has nothing to do with what he did in the past, it has everything to do with how he improved from his past self.

Sora has always been sort of the golden child, he hasn't actually lost anything significant nor has he went face to face with the actual temptation of darkness.
