Best is playing through single player first to enjoy the story and take your time then playing co-op. It's hard to leisurely play 4 player co-op pve games with my friends since we all have jobs and limited times to get together and play, so we rush through and miss a lot of story as a result. I can't even tell you a single thing about the plot from Borderlands Presequel except the final boss was the worst final boss I've ever fought.

I do enjoy co-op more but a lot of the times anything PvE gets ruined when people know the most efficient way of doing everything and then it becomes a game of just doing the same motions because you know everything that will happen
