Everyone is making beautiful cities and I end up with blocks 10/x10, because I can't drop my autism about efficiency and it all just sprawls into the same city over and over again.
Is there a way to make this game both max efficient and max comfy? I'm trying for years and each time I end up eventually with generic 10x10 blocks, straight roads, no diagonals, no funky bullshit and... it's just painful.
While effcient.

Skylines. If people took the time to make their own assets like the ones shown here for SC4 (which are other people's and not anyone here) and manually create the cities like these shown from SC4 (again, other people's, not one from thread) it would be far superior.

SC4 focuses especially on transportation. Making your road and transit systems efficient is key. Then again, there are some odd factors in how the sims behave that can seem strange and a little nonsensical, and how some of the mechanics work. I've read that once you make a connection to another region off the edge of your city map, many Sims will travel to the next city for work (this has to do with all the city maps in a region being connected and their growth being dependent on each other).

Best way to start is don't invest in education too quickly. The cost will quickly outgrow your tax base if you start building high schools and colleges, or even elementary schools, right away. Low-education sims will allow you to build a lot of dirty industry that will give you a solid tax base, and you can slowly begin the process of transitioning towards higher educated sims and high-tech industry.
>>
anyone else love making industrial hellhole cities?

there's just something fun about making a massive sprawl of dirty industry right next to a city that looks like it has a life expectancy of 35

Probably because they hired actual architects to help design and style everything. This is also why I have such a hard time playing CS for so long. The style for all the buildings is terrible. You can tell they didn't actually study how real world buildings, specially older buildings and houses look. Everything looks like some shitty post modern Europe building. Nothing has that look and grit of old 1940's art deco of New York or Chicago.

It's the same thing with the overall style. CS is much more colorful and cartoony like model sets while SC4 has more earth tones with a much heaver focus on realism.
>>
>>384001629

NAM combined with the mod allowing you to build commuting stops on roads rather on blocks are the only must-haves.
Everything else is purely optional, but those two are a must.

need more isometric games. It allows artists to directly express themselves. No artwork to shitty 3D model, just a sprite directly made by an artist. Factorio has some cool sprites.
>>
>>384000521
What mods are these my dude?
>>
>>383999736
Hiring bunch of architects and city planners.
Hiring really good artist and research team to do all the sprites.
Keeping it all relatively simple, but with very strong emphasis on simulation.
Using experience from previous projects AND fanbase feedback to work on improving things from previous game.

In short - the typical middle-to-big budget game from early-to-mid 00s. A lot of effort by people who were in the business for quite some while and good communication between them, with clearly defined objectives.

Compare it with with the utter mishandling of the latest SC "game" and you will see it all even more clear.
Or with Cities Skylines, which was made by people who were previously working on traffic simulator (and a pretty mediorce one), with dry artstyle of generic 3D, zero architect and city-planning feedback, no fanbase to ask and then openly waiting for emerging fanbase to create mods to repack ideas from them as DLCs.

Honestly, I really miss the way the games were done before about 2005 mark, when everyone jumped on 3D and other gimmics, then their projects collapesed and then they were bought by big fishes in the business, turning into obedient slaves with zero creativity left, because contract forbids that.

I honestly feel like it was because they clearly had alot of corporate sponsors (Toyota/McDonald's, etc.)

Probably gave them the money to hire quality resources to get it done real well. Great advertisement opportunity for the corps, and it doesn't feel like forced jewery since it's a fucking city. Also.. small bonus is that it eliminates the need to literally pay a team of like 6 dudes to come up with decent sounding fake business names to add realism to the city.

To chip off - yes.
To base funding on it? Fuck no. That's the mistake too many nostalgia driven projects have made.

But honestly? I would like to see Sierra's city builders remade in style of Emperor. You know, still keeping them 2D, still sprites, but all the upgrades the entire franchise got over each title: moddable city blocks, greatly expanded campaigns and so on. Because whenever I return to anything made before at least Zeus (which still wasn't perfect), I end up with pointless slums or retarded combinations just to block my walkers.
And no 3D bullshit, thanks, Caesar 4 did that and was utter shit, along Children of the Nile.

My dream SC4 successor:
>Engine designed to scale well with lots of CPU cores and GPUs
>Freeform camera?
>Easily moddable with steam workshop or reduced dependency autism
>Pseudo-random building generation (don't want to run in to the same buildings over and over again)
>Enhanced SC4 graphics and simulation
>More realism (like no 45 degree incline roads)
>Easier to build transport networks
>Easier to add eye candy (fuck putting down 100s of props)

not only high tech, the realistic art style means that it can actually (with a couple of mods) properly portray the grimy aspects of a city which in turn helps make everything feel a lot more real.

actually I would like to see a smart algorithm that can occasionally build buildings in construction projects

like you'll never see the same exact prestige skyscraper twice in the same city, however you'll get patches of identical commieblocks bunched together if zoning allows

same with homes: villas are all different, but you'll get some similar looking premade housing projects (maybe with small, random, differences in tiny props on the houses)

perhaps all of this could be done with a new type of zone called a "project development" zone which allows for similarly looking buildings to be constructed at exactly the same time
>>

interesting statistics about SC4 threads

1 out of 3 people reading one such thread without SC4 installed on their computer will attempt to install it

26% of these installers will find their installation to be incompatible with their current OS

another 45% will successfully install the game but give up during the modding process and proceed to forget about it until the next thread. Half of which will then switch over to CS, the other half are stuck in a loop until the next thread.

Of the remaining 29%, 48% will experience critical mod incompatibility and severe crashes resulting in them still dropping the game, another 48% will actually go and play the fully modded game and a remaining 4% are the poor bastards who decide that they'll enjoy playing the game in it's vanilla state

Because grids are not effcient by default? Basic geometry, you stupid idiot. In a square, where corners are labelled A, B, C and D, the shortest way from A to C or B to D leads in straight, diagonal line, not by going A to B and B to C .
Dunno, they don't teach math either in States?

It's the easy solution, yes. That would lead to massive transit though and clog up your streets eventually.

There are also more complex ways to build a city, with various little manufacturing buildings / high tech industry sprinkled across living areas.
A 3x3 industry building can have between 50/250 jobs and when its inside a living area the people living closeby will walk to their job instead of clogging the street with cars.

Scattering them across a living area will create tons of jobs but with little to no additional cars on the street.

Just make sure it's not dirty industry. Those make your town shitty.

Most European cities are AT LEAST 500 years old so they weren't really designed.

This isn't a bad thing though. Look at LA: made for a 70s car culture that doesn't exist anymore.

In the future cities will be ever denser and more mixed.

This is the one that basically renders grid pointless by default, since everything else will stream from it.

>>384015921
Never said that.
But they get a bit pointless too if you just have 4 roads crossing at 90 degrees. Not utterly redundant, but far from their full practical capabilities.

>>384016132
This, too, but even if you take into account the "designed vs natural expansion", you still end up with situation when you do NOT design grid. Kind of reminds me of the plae I've spend my childhood. It was a series of commie blocks, but there was no grid in design of it. Still excellent communication and spread of services, while in the same time designed with care and to create a nice looking neighbourhood.
Compared with your typical American suburb, with just rows after rows of houses in straight lines, it makes you wonder why burgers keep joking about commie blocks.
Envy, maybe?

>>
>>384016786
>But they get a bit pointless too if you just have 4 roads crossing at 90 degrees

nope, the great thing about roundabouts is the traffic is always moving, we have a city in portugal with retarded amounts of roundabouts and the fact is they simply work, even during rush hour the traffic is always moving, shit's efficient as fuck, every city around here is adopting more and more roundabouts and you see a gigantic difference.

merging and yielding rules might be different in the states but with the rules we have here the roundabouts are the best way of keeping the traffic always flowing.

I'm not saying they are not going to work. But when you have a 4-way crossing, you can often just build 4-way crossing instead of roundabout. Cheaper and smaller, which is often the priority over functionality.
Which is in fact the reason why there are barely any roundabouts in States - they just build 4-way crossings, since they are already stuck with grid.
Which they perpetuate for god knows what reason. Looks bad, doesn't work, isn't exactly cheaper, too.

If you want decent transportation then you are pretty much forced to go grid. Most English cities are as far removed from an organized grid as possible and utter hell to try and drive around as a result. Compare this with American cities that tend to be more regimented and can handle way more traffic density.

While I myself share your view on the situation, they FINALLY fixed the issues with road-laying with the latest expansion. Took them over 2 years, but they did it, along with other numerous, idiotic issues road-laying had.

RCT2 is easier to grasp, but also aged on the mechanical side much, much worse.
SC4 has much steeper learning curve, but once you grasp basics, it offers basically unlimited replayability and almost no clunky mechanics.

Not OP, but:
1) Use GOG version. Least performance issues on modern rigs.
2) Get AT LEAST NAM mod, it's super-useful
3) If you feel like vastly modded experience, the link other anon posted here >>384011037
is a pre-packed combination of one of the comfiest and most useful mods
4) Embrace the fact you are building American city, because mechanics are based around that. If you are American yourself, it won't be much issue, but it took me a while to break through certain "obvious" things for Yuropoor Slav to get going with city design.

Give me your average SC4 run.

>start up
>lower all taxes to 5%, dirty industry to 20%
>build zones, streets, bus stops, two or three parks, police, firefighters, school, clinic, power and water
>arround 1000~1200 per month
>unfreeze time
>shit gets build
>barely write black letters at the end of the month
>build another area
>streets start to clog up even though NAM is installed
>start writing red numbers, even when I increase taxes
>shit is not good
>save town, build a new next to it
>repeat

I just can't build good cities.

You're a literal retard if you recognize your mistakes but keep doing it over and over again without learning

Here's how mine goes and keep in mind I'm NOT ACTUALLY GOOD at this game:
>Start small
>Offer only power and water at start
>Never pause but never speed up time either
>Keep zoning little by little according to demand and growing organically
>Keep adding services when I can afford them, but make sure to fine tune each individual service to serve only as many people as need it
>Budget never goes negative
>try to create areas of massive pedestrian traffic by connecting huge skyscraper residentials to public transport with pedestrian only tiles

SimCity (1989): barely even a game. inspired by the mapmaking process of early flight sims.
SimCity 2000: fun and goofy, a classic. Cities can be ported to SimCopter for some PG13 Grand Theft Auto fun
SimCity 3000: C O M F Y but doesn't work on modern operating systems.
SimCity4: like 3000 but with slightly more autism
SimCity Societies: a raging tire fire. avoid.
SimCity (2013): p-pls forget about SCS look we brought back single player. Might as well play Cities Skylines instead.

Every City building game needs like 50 expansions or mods to bring it to where it should have been out of the box, thats why I can never fully enjoy them.

I like Skylines but there's like $80 worth of DLC I don't even know what exactly it does. Natural Disasters sound cool but what do they really do

Trash
After Dark gives you taxis and leisure services
Snowfall gives you snowmaps and trams
Natural Disasters gives you disasters and disaster response services
Mass Transit gives you extra mass transit options like monorails, airships and cablecars
Match day gives you a stadium with unique mechanics
Pearl's from the east are just 5 chinese buildings
Rest are music and community buildings

They are basically charging through the noose for minor elements that if bundled all togeter might make a DLC worth about 30 bucks.
And 3/4 of the content is taken from mods and turned official (but shit) anyway.

Avoid that game at all costs, unless you pirate it. Paradox DLC system is a literal pyramid scheme.
