They didn't. Exploration barely feels rewarded, there's no incentive to clear out almost any enemy camp. You sacrifice weapon durability to open a chest that contains a shittier weapon than the one you used to clear the camp with. Should have had Koroks being held hostage instead.

Because it is a shit genre full of different skins of the same game. They did something different with the genre and people's minds were blown away, like they hadn't realised that they were playing the same game over and over until BotW.

Honestly I wish I could say I love it but I just can't.

The world is amazing, it's polished as fuck; but fuck me the game is just boring. I heard somebody on /v/ describe it as The Legend of Zelda: Meandering Edition and I can't sum it up more perfectly than that. Quests are just kind of boring, Shrines are kind of boring, Divine Beasts are kind of boring, there's no content here that's just really "wow". It just feels like you're fucking around doing tasks, it almost like a job.

Exploring the map and finding locations is fantastic, I just wish there was more meaty and interesting stuff.

Utter fucking desperation and delusion. The Zelda series is held to far more scrutiny than almost any other series. Mostly because everyone expects each new Zelda game to be some kind of genre-defining milestone which changes gaming forever.

Nintendo are good but they can't make that kind of impact every time. But they did manage it with BotW.

They kinda do. I'm sure there are ways to make open world games more interesting, but the folks at Bethesda certainly haven't found it.
New Vegas was good, though, but mostly because of the writing/worldbuilding.
>>
>>384004402

GTA's lock-on system can be loosely compared to OoT's, as well as the approach to a believable "open" world.

I played New Vegas for 2 hours, same "walk around brown landscapes talking to people and point 'n clicking enemies to death" as the rest.

The writing was pretty good, I guess, but I have absolutely 0 incentive to keep playing because I know that next hill will give way to another generic city with generic people and generic enemies.

Zelda was different to say the least. I went over a hill and saw a fucking dragon fly by, which I trailed down to a ravine. I picked some mushrooms in the forest and the ground gave way to a stone giant. It made me wonder what the next village would be like, what the next enemy would be etc.
>>
>>384004586
>Where are all the colors
>Why is the combat tedious instead of fun
>Why are these townspeople so boring
Are you sure you're talking about Skyrim and not BotW? It seems to apply to both.
>>
>>384004719
Of course it was going to be something as general is that. Here's the thing, if Nintendo didn't have a lock on someone else would've invented it eventually and Dan Houser would be saying
>Anyone who makes 3D games who says they've not borrowed something from x or y is lying."
It's one of those generalities that means absolutely nothing.
>Anyone who makes cars who says they've not borrowed something form Ford is lying.
>Anyone who makes chairs who says they've not borrowed something from the first person to make chairs is lying
This point is applicable to your believable open world part, too.
>>
>>383995130

By using their head, no shit.
>>
>>383995130

I had more fun with GTA V and Red Dead Redemption. Felt like there was more meaningful content. Most of the stuff in BotW is fucking boring, and I'm honestly not impressed by the climbing as everyone else is. Total freedom of movement really isn't super important especially if the game doesn't take advantage: driving around in San Andreas is way more fun than just climbing rocks.

Is "muh physics" really a huge deal? I see people always post these fancy webms as proof of the game's greatness but it's not like the game is really built around these moments, the tasks you do is still a mostly conventional checklist of tasks.

Also, lets just admit it: the overworld is fucking boring. It's astounding how such a large world has such a profound lack of any mystery or intrigue. Especially with the storyline you'd expect more ancient civilization dwellings or mysterious caverns. I still think the lack of a lot of NPCs is a problem. Shrines are a poor substitute for actually meaningful content. Traversing the boring, ugly world with those fancy physics gets old fucking quickly.
>>
>>384004402
Ok, let me school you on game design.

Before Mario 64, 3D gaming was a broken fucking mess of shit. Developer were clueless trying to turn the 2D platforming formula into 3D - run to the end of the level, progress to the next level, rinse and repeat.

It was a depressing fucking time.

Nintendo swept everything aside and schooled the entire industry on how to make a 3D platformer.

Nintendo created a hubworld, which had the main levels branch off from it in a non-linear fashion, with the focus on making the player replay these levels with different objectives.

Benefits included:
Having a smaller number of levels meant that the devs could spend more time making the levels more intricate and memorable levels
-the player is encouraged to explore and discovery leads to player reward and empowerment.
-Player agency emerges from non-linear gameplay and progression to unlock new levels becomes an incentive for the player to improve skill levels

The genius of this design, and the revolution it caused in gaming, cannot be overstated enough.

All of a sudden, almost every single 3D platform game stole Nintendo's design. And it still gets used today.

>>
>>384004185
I fucking hate Nintendo dicklickers as much as anyone, but holy shit dude. Are you seriously taking exception with a direct quote from one of the game's creators? You can debate that quote as it applies to other games and developers, but if Dan Houser says they took something from Mario and Zelda for Grand Theft Auto, that means they took something from fucking Mario and Zelda. Get over yourself.

>>
>>384005005
>if Nintendo didn't have a lock on someone else would've invented it eventually

Of course you can make that arguement about anything. There are entire scientific thesis written about the philosophy of it all.

>X doesn't deserve to get credit for inventing that because somebody else would have done it eventually. It was inevitable.

What it comes down to is RISK. Nintendo took a risk in doing something nobody else had done, to go against conventional wisdom and break the mold. What's one of the reasons Nintendo are so respected; they continually think outside the box. They continally take RISKS.
>>
>>384005005
So just because you believe that someone else would have done the same thing, eventually, whoever did it first doesn't deserve credit for it?

No one deserves credit for anything, because someone else would have done it regardless. Seriously?

Not that hard even if it was true.

Open world is a meme and BotW shows it better than any other game.
After 20 shrines you've seen all of them, after 20 koroks you've seen all of them, after 10 Bokoblins, Lizalfos and Moblins you've seen all of what non-boss combat has to offer. After the Plateau you only get two more powers that are barely used and never needed. 10x10 m in a biome and you've seen the entire province. It's the first game to really hammer down scale and the feeling of traversing great distances, but there's nothing to do once you get there.
>>
>>384006375
You didn't address my question at all. If you think it's stupid to talk about things that don't lead anywhere, why were you attempting to do exactly that?
>It's idiotic that someone thought that was important enough to frame in an image.
You're acting like creating an image takes any effort or is indicative of a placement of value. I "framed" this image in about 2 seconds, because I thought it would be funny to shitpost with.
>>

>>384006757
>why were you attempting to do exactly that?

You misinterpret what I'm after and doing. I'm not talking about game design itself, or Nintendo's influence in this industry. We know those things and don't have to go over them. I'm after rhetoric and purpose behind it. Notice how a few anonymous people actually took the time to talk to me in Nintendo's defense (not including the first two people who replied to me) instead of talk about the subject of the thread? It's more important to them to defend Nintendo's status, when they don't need defending. It means nothing for anonymous to fellate Nintendo in this fashion. Yet here we are.

Huh? Those comparisons don't even make sense. He's saying that the shrines and korok seed "puzzles" are incredibly repetitive, which they are, and that the enemy variety is sorely lacking, which it is.

In no way is what he's saying analogous to saying that an entire sub-genre of film is the same, or that any music performed with a certain instrument is the same. I guess you could make a point with Tetris, but that's a 30 year old game that isn't meant to be played for dozens of hours.

To compare to Tetris, because you brought it up. The Great Plateau is like playing Tetris for an hour, the rest of BotW is like playing Tetris for 200 hours. There's barely anything new you can learn and all you can really do is get more effective at doing the same things over and over again.

>How did they create the best open world game of all time?
They didn't?
BoTW is literally, quite literally the perfect trasposition of the physical sandbox game for children in videogame form.

You got this big box you can run around in but there's really nothing meaningful outside of the same old Zelda main quest.
You can do all kinds of physical exertions like climbing shit, shieldboarding, or turning water to ice but it doesn't matter because there's nothing actually tied to it outside of going to point X to point Y, if you're lucky you get a quest tied to getting to point X to Y or maybe a grab the chest minigame, there's no actual reason to have any of that other than "it looks cool", removing climbing would also make the game much better since you'll need to take detours and the whole game's map would suddenly actually matter, instead, just like a id in a sandbox you're just kind of walking around in a few different ways.
The combat is laughable but Zelda games always had garbage combat, that doesn't excuse Nintendo for the shitty animations though.
The shrines are basically procedurally generated puzzles based on a few general objectives, kill all enemies, complete a babby puzzle or simply explore the shrine, copy and pasted ad libitum so the players actually have something to do, Koroks are the same exact thing, you're repeating the same three quests over and over and over and over again, none of which actually have any narrative subpurpose either.
Let's not talk about the pathetic handful of NPCs in this empty box of sand, grass and rock.
But hey, at least you can go straight to Ganon this time.
Fact is the Nintendo userbase doesn't play anything other than their games and when Nintendo actually tries to do something different they think it's rocket science when it's actually a pretty damn mediocre and archaic effort in doing something that has been done better decades ago.

Whoa, h-h-how do they d-do it?

Literally no one would care about BotW if you replaced all Zelda connections with different things.

Well, it works fine to me, with some drops here and there. But even so, I'm planing on buying a Switch before the release of Odyssey, and I will probably buy BotW because it is worth it. The game is so damn good.

Some WiiU games need to have a rerelease for the Switch. Wonderful 101, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Maiden of Black Water, Bayonetta 2.

Open World games are garbage.

When 90% of your content is fucking traversal across large expanses full of nothing but copy+pasted enemy outposts, towers, and collectible bullshit you know your genre is fucked.

The shrine spam and the dungeons really pissed me off. Those were two areas that made Zelda fucking FAMOUS, the core of their quality.

In BOTW they thought it was wise to vomit 120 samey shrines at us along with some of the weakest "dungeons" the series has ever seen.

>Wish they'd left time to come up with a little more enemy variety, though. It's worse than Nioh's.
This made me drop the game. Nioh and Nier: Automata's enemy variety is piss poor, but fuck me their combat was more developed (especially the former) and they had other merits to them beyond combat.

After a while I just started avoiding fights because it just isn't very good.

I must be the only one who found BOTW dungeon design best in the 3D series. Divine beasts are too fucking short but their and shrines puzzles are some of the most fun in 3D.

Not lovers, she just respects and admires him after initially despising him.

The lovers dynamic is what we got in Skyward Sword, and I doubt they'll be revisiting anything from that game.

You must be insane to think these infantile dungeons are some of the best in this franchise. Jesus Christ, man. People are really suffering from the halo effect in this game.

You misspelled CD Projekt Red, and they did it because they wanted to represent a culture they believed in with the best of their ability.

Nearly 100% of traditional 3D Zelda dungeon is infantile. Only 1 or 2 from OOT are as good, only stone temple from MM and literally nothing from WW, TP, SS. Especially WW. You want to talk about infantile, puzzles in these games used to be pulling a block along a fucking track to open a door. Looking up to shoot a switch. At least BOTW has physics, dungeon structure manipulation and platforming. Using cryonis to pry open a gate underwater takes more creative thinking than nearly anything in old 3D, and that's sad. If anyone's suffering from any effect it's you faggots who actually thought that shit was good.
