How should stats effect skills in turn based RPGs? I've been thinking about it and everything leads to basic moves being way too overpowered.

Start with a very, very simple formula, like one the old RPG Maker games used to use
(Attack*2)-(Defense*2) = Damage done
From there, you can flourish into other additions, but it's a good base
Alternatively, just use VERY low stat totals for much easier times

i prefer limiting buffs to plus or minus 25%
you can see the changes without it getting silly

What about HP and MP. Should it be based on a strength stat or level alone.
