It's an FPS with one analog stick – it aged badly. People who claim that games can never age are ridiculous, standards change, and sometimes for the better.

The game was designed with its control scheme in mind. It's why you aren't doing much running and gunning, but instead a slow, methodical comb of a level with a silenced pistol. There is the occasional fight, but auto-aim makes up for it, placing a burden on the players ability to move, cover and select weapons as opposed to aim 100% correctly. The designer knew this and designed the bosses and fights accordingly. The game has aged just fine.

This. It was always a bad FPS, it was just the best FPS on a console at the time.

You can play Goldeneye and Perfect Dark with a mouse and keyboard at 1080p and 60FPS. Suddenly they're classics (be sure to turn off aim assist).
