I play a healer in FFXIV. And they aren't leaders. The sad fact is they basically just follow the tank around and heal them, randomly healing any DPS who can't dodge as needed. If the tank sucks, then the healer can start directing people and 'take command'. I've done it many times. But the way the game is set up, the tank is suppose to take command and basically do everything except limit break.

Outside of trinity based MMOs, the healer gets put into the role of the subservient because so many RPGs make the secondary female into that. Look at Final Fantasy IV for example. Rosa is the epitome of what most people think a healer is. Of course most people are idiots and also don't recognize that Rosa was the best character in the game. She was a voice of reason in a story full of prideful, idiotic men who all wanted to kill themselves.

There are a million ways the tanks can screw up. There's a very limited number of ways the healer can screw up.

I realize that other games are different, but I played FFXI back in the for a short while and ended up joining a couple of old friends to try a private server (half the shit isn't working, but fuck it, it's cool) with x4 exp so that we can enjoy leveling back up whatever jobs we want without dedicating our whole lives to it (the completely unnecessary time sink is why I've never bothered with any other MMO). I decided to main Red Mage because it's what I played back in the day/Red Mages kick ass. It left my other two buddies to play roles where they can each manage tanking and melee dps between them.

I've got to tell you, /v/, our new meta with an accelerated exp server and just the three of us instead of a party of six is pretty much:

>Me casting a couple dozen spells every single battle to debuff, making sure everyone's buff cycle is up based on the timers on every spell with every party member, having to delicately balance how much hate I'm drawing with how badly someone needs to be healed, positioning myself to avoid mob-specific AoE/cone/stare attacks, being aware of potentially party-wiping contingencies like attracting blood aggro or magic aggro dependent on unique areas, having to make sure my idiot teammates don't run off into danger before they get even the most basic protect/shell buffs, knowing which spells are more/less likely to be resisted based on elemental weaknesses for every mob, and on top of everything, keeping my MP high enough to keep it all up.

If I ever designed an MMO, I would do away with a dedicated healer role entirely. In its place, I would have each class type instead have unique ways to regenerate health during the fight, from basic passive regen, to lifesteal, to consumables on a cooldown, etc. Fights would deal much lower damage, and everyone would have to attempt to mitigate as much as possible by avoiding attacks, shunting aggro, and soaking on occasion.

I prefer games where there is no dedicated class for anything. Everyone is an attacker but has a sub-spec into their special roles; DPS, tanking, healing or buffing and what not. Passive, hotkey-management based MMOs seem to not be that way most of the time while more active games like shooter or brawler MMOs tend to do this better.

They make good offtanks or main-melee DPS depending on the raids. Skirt-around and collect scrap mobs for someone to AOE or take out a secondary. Catch Big Baddies attention if the MT get's out of rotation.

Monk was designed like this a long time but its dmg just didn't shove it far enough ahead to be "worth it" compared to DPS who also buffed other DPS.

Samurai does such insanely bigdick DPS that a lot of raiders admit support from it isn't needed. Its already in the top parsing teams of fflogs constantly. Almost every team has 1 token samurai to buttfuck whatever they are fighting.

Aside from that, training dummies were released that all had different HP for the diff classes they were assigned to. With samurai very obviously classed on top. This inadvertently gave everyone an "order" of ranking for the diff DPS, tanks, healers. Samurai and Black Mage are way on top of everyone else.

Very, very rarely do you see a non-tank as a leader to something. In the cases I've seen it happen, we had a guy who traditionally tanked for us for many years but eventually became a ranged DPS guy instead, and still basically lead everything for everyone just because the next tank in line never really stepped up. I've also seen a brother duo where the older brother played a grizzled priest healer and the younger one by several years tanked for him, but due to their real life dynamic, the younger always looked up to the older for guidance (And the reason he healed anyway was to have his brother assume a more glamorous role than a support one).

I always found it interesting that leadership was different in Final Fantasy XIV compared to WoW. Back in my WoW days, all of the raid groups I joined had the MT leading the group, while a lot of the raid groups I've joined in XIV have been pretty diverse. My main complaint with the trinity is that it forces specialization to an absurd degree. If someone shows up as a healer, only the strength of their heals are really taken into account, all other utility is at worst ignored and at best taken as icing on the cake.

I miss the most when I was running around in Shadowbane as a Confessor with heals and massive fire damage. It was missing a lot of things other healers had, but it was still useful for keeping people up in a pinch.

Change away from the trinity system would be a good start. It's pointless in FFXIV anyway since outside of dungeons, every class can do anything. The only reason FFXIV needs tanks at all is because in dungeons/events, they crank up the HP and damage. In the PvE story events, a healer is essentially a tank. Might as well just go the ARPG path where you can level any class to be any role.

What are you talking about? FFXIV is an example of a developer trying so hard to balance everything that you can play any class and do anything. Even in some instances where a SCH is going to be better than a WHM for aoe heals, they still make it easy enough that a WHM can do it if they have even basic skill. Same for tanks and DPS.

Uniquely, SMN and SCH share the same class: Arcanist. Only they are like this. Its like a failed effort on SE's part to tie multiple jobs to 1 class at start of ARR.

So if you are say, 40 SMN. You are also automatically 40 SCH. You can swap to it at any time as long as you flagged it so that you're just able to be it. You'll be both of them at max level just by raising 1 of them. If you're fucking desperate for Queue, then go as healer. Otherwise be DPS fagget rest of time.

You're constantly reacting to what's happening in the battle, and have very little control over the situation besides keeping it stable. As a sch I would shield and deploy the target of the stack marker in lakex or deploy a crit shield at the start to negate the first aoe and slow ass white mage healsluts would medica 2 scratch damage. Once I figured out how much healers make or break these ex fights I leveled my sch and the same day I got my book and right side done in like a few hours while I had nothing on tank.
