It's not like today's games, the game uses a lot of metaphors based on James' past. If you follow the clues about James' past it gets better. As well as the fat dude and the girl you met in the graveyard. If you complete it to the end, you'll be greatly satisfied because the game is really story driven but didn't truly make use of cutscenes

Eh, SH2 has Toluca Prison which was pretty unnerving. Otherwise, yeah. Wonderful sense of melancholy but it has a hard time translating that to genuine fear IMO.

The game used psychological fear. True psychological fear. The environment reflected each character's subconscious mindset.

I'll give you Angela. She was constantly sexually abused by her father and brother. The room where you kill that little bed monster reflects that. On the walls you see little thrusting anus pistons which reflect that, not to mention she kept callig the monster dad. When she dies the place is surrounded by extremely hot flames, James commented on how it was hot as hell. She responds how this is what life is like for her every day before she kills herself.

It's more like watchig a character driven indie film with extreme horror elements. The more depressed and emotionally hurt the characters become, the more gloomy and terrible their environments are around them. This isn't in their minds by the way. Their subconscious affects the literal environment as well.

I'm curious, did SH2fags start with SH2? Genuinely asking because SH1 was my first, played it when it came out and it was always my favorite but I still loved 2 and 4(never played 3).

Yeah, which is fantastic thematically but it's strongly offfset by SH2 being very easy for a horror game. When the meat of enemy types are as toothless as lying figures and mannequins it's hard to say you're fearing for your life while playing it. You can have all the great themes in the world but survival horror is a genre that thrives on adversity and, at least compared to 1 and even 3, SH2 sort of forgets that outside of the Pyramid Head encounters. The other Team Silent games did a much better job of outright putting me on edge, even if SH2 is a masterclass effort at subtly wriggling under the player's skin. The otherworld town of 1, the sensory abrasion of 3, and the bait-and-switch room mechanic of 4 are in my opinion all stronger terror devices.

I love this game but it ruined Silent Hill as a series later down the line. It introduced the dollar store purgatory characterization for the town and the "everybody had to have a hidden dark past" bullshit which was fine for the one game but it went on to characterize everything.

That aside I liked 1 and 3 more for the oppressiveness of the atmosphere and sound design. I don't even care for cult stories and I loath "metahuman gets fucked in the ass repeatedly" stories (though the fact that it wasn't in the context of "racism is the real monster" helped) but I felt the story was vastly more engrossing. I know it may not be the most popular but I have a soft spot for #3. The feeling of just trying to get back home in your own town which has become oddly empty and surreal as well as the continued focus on family hit closer to home. I also like the soundtrack. It was a bit poppy but since the protagonist was a teenage girl, it fit somehow.

It's why we see Pyramidhead constantly raping them throughout the game. The symbolism is everywhere if you pay enough attention which I really love.

That's essentially what the town of Silent Hill is. An extreme therapis that makes you confront the darkness in your heart head on. Whether you live on is up to you and if you learn from your pain/mistakes. That aspect shouldn't change just because its a different game.

An example, with Angela ultimately she could never defeat her darkness so she just killed herself. Eddie couldnt handle it and in the end his insanity triggered from the constant bullying got him killed. James in the good ending realizes what Maria is and finally accepts what he's done so that he can begin to heal and move on. In the Maria ending where he just thinks it's all fake, he asks Maria to be with him which she agrees. As soon as they start leaving Maria starts coughing heavily hinting that she will die just like Mary did and James will go through all of this all over again showing us that he learned nothing from his time in Silent Hill.

This game is absolutely brilliant. Part of me wishes that they could remake it for the next gen.

It's because of the ancient magic awakened with what happened Alessa that people with darkness/grief in their hearts are drawn to Silent Hill. 2 Confirms this.

It's up for debate whether the city has become sentient, but it does call people with datkness in their hearts. Otherwise, there'd be no reason for James, Eddie or Angela to go there. Especially Eddie and James who have zero connections to Silent Hill.
