Assassin for a Rogue, since it gives you the ability to do tremendous damage on targets (especially for dagger rogues, since they can get a dagger that massively increases flanking damage) and chain-stealth for even more damage; Assassin abilities do work with bows as well as melee. I don't mean to sound like it's better for a dagger Rogue than a ranged one, that's just personal preference (and chain-stealthing is slightly easier and more useful for an archer), I just wanted to let you know about that dagger.
For a Mage, Knight-Enchanter or Rift Mage, though I'd recommend Knight-Enchanter. Rift Mage is useful for a few more spells to cast and for debuffing enemies, but I find it's better to just use your companion if that's what you want. Knight Enchanter only really gives you a couple of useful passives and a quick escape button, but one of those passives (gain Barrier on damaging an enemy) is fantastically good, and most of the best Mage abilities are in the regular trees anyway. On that note, if you decide to go Mage, pay attention to the passive abilities because some of them are really good (specifically the ones that lower cooldown/spell cost on critical hits, or give you free/cooldown-less casts); Winter's Grasp/Winter's Ruin is also a really good damage dealer.

If you find yourself dying a lot, try and find an ability or item that will grant you Guard-on-hit; there's an upgraded Warrior skill that grants it to the whole party so you can give it to Cass, which will make your life a lot easier.

Oh, and don't try to clear the Hinterlands (the starting area) all at once, eventually you'll get a quest that leads you elsewhere in the world and you'll come back later.

I actually like the Dragon Age Keep idea! It takes time to choose every option, but I think it's smart because it removes the potential for annoying save-importing bugs that both Awakening and DAII had, and it means you don't have to replay the entire series if you want to change a couple of things in your import.

For example, the two world states that I use are almost exactly the same, beyond who my Warden is and who they romanced.

I agree about DAII, it had a lot of great ideas and did a lot of things well (the dynamic the party had, the friendship/rivalry system, the lore, the idea of focusing an entire game around one city and its environs over many years) and what fell down in execution (the recycled areas) can be forgiven.
I would've liked to see one game/expansion focused on the Mage/Templar war and another focused on Corypheus and the Elves, too - it was too much for one game, and the war didn't end up getting the attention it deserved.

For all it's shortcomings 2's story and character arc were great, and deserved to be further built upon. I've played Dragon Age so many fucking times, and every time was a GOAT experience due to all the choices you can make. Never played Awakening though, despite me crushing hard on Morrigan. Should I do it lads?

Of course you should. Awakening is great, but Morrigian is only mentioned in Awakening. The Witch Hunt DLC which was the last DLC for DAO is the one the focuses on Morrigan. That's where you can choose to follow her and end up being a family with both of you and your child. And if you romanced her in Origins all the way she appears in Inquisition and gushes about her Warden.
